Summary

Barra de la Cruz is a legendary surf spot located on Mexico’s Pacific coast, about 30 minutes south of Huatulco and roughly 100 km from Puerto Escondido. Famous for hosting a historic WSL contest in 2006, Barra quickly gained a reputation as one of the best right-hand point breaks in the world.

With perfect, rippable walls, barrel sections, and ramps for aerials, this wave is a true gem—but it’s not always firing. Barra de la Cruz is more sheltered than nearby breaks like Puerto Escondido, meaning it typically picks up less swell, but when it turns on, it delivers world-class rides.

When to go

The best time to surf Barra de la Cruz is from April to November, during Mexico’s rainy season. That is when south swells pick up in size and consistency and turn most surf spots on the Mexican coastline into wave machines.
