Located on the southern coast of Tasmania, is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable surf spots in the world. 10. Pasta Point, Maldives

Just a short ferry ride from Male, the country’s capital city is a private island called Dhonveli. This beautiful island is home to the Maldives’ best and most consistent wave, Pasta Point. Getting to surf this high-end reef break with only you and a few other surfers out (30 people max.) is something that can’t really be found these days. If you cannot afford to stay at the Dhonveli Resort, there are a few similar “public” waves in the area like Honky’s and Sultan’s.

9. P-Pass, Micronesia

This one is probably the least known in the whole countdown but it totally deserves its rank. P-Pass is located on the Federated States of Micronesia‘s main island, Pohnpei. It is a powerful and hollow right-hand wave that was surfed by many of the world’s best surfers either on strike missions or posing for magazines. 

Being a bit far from land, the only way to get access to the wave is by boat which are offered by a few surfing companies, the main one being the Pohnpei Surf Club.

8. Lance’s Right, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

Lance’s Right is located in the Mentawai Island chain which is becoming the new surfing mecca. More and more surfers discover the potential of the waves of this region, Lance’s Right being the main attraction. 7. Superbank, Gold Coast, Australia

2. Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Teahupo’o is the most perfect barrel on the planet, period. Whether it is from 4 feet or 25 feet+, this wave will stay just as hollow and clean. At first, what may look like a closeout, suddenly offers an end section that spits you out in the channel for a 4-5 seconds ride maximum. However, this wave is not about length, it is about the thrill. Given its remote location, Teahupo’o remains much less crowded than Pipeline and the town is still very raw.

The general setup is also gorgeous with crystal clear water and a jaw-dropping landscape shaped by volcanic mountains in the back. Be ready to touch the reef and break a few boards.

It was pretty natural to award the number one spot to the Queen of all waves, Pipeline. Not only is this wave totally insane, it has a deep and magical history. Many great surfers grew up on this wave to later be crowned as world champions on that same wave. Pipeline is a hollow and powerful Hawaiian reef break that offers consistent and perfect tube rides, wave after wave.

Although it is considered as one of the best waves on Earth, it most definitely is also the most dangerous one. Many surfers have suffered serious injuries on this reef, some of them paying the cost of life. 8. Chicama, Peru

Chicama is known to be nothing less than the longest wave in the world. On a good day, you can surf this left for almost a mile and the locals even started using boats to take the surfers back to the take off zone instead of having to paddle all the way back. Located on the dry coastline of Peru, Chicama is pretty mellow and should suit a wide range of surfing levels.

One of Bali’s most iconic surf spot, Uluwatu is blessed with a unique set up both in and out of the water. Then, the wave itself is a challenging left with a few barreling sections and about three different takeoff spots. On a good day, they will all connect into one long wall of water with the potential of catching the wave of your life.

When to go: The best time to surf Uluwatu, on Bali’s west coast is from April to September as the winds are favorable and swells are more consistent.

5. Desert Point, Lombok, Indonesia

Desert point is a very fast and challenging barreling wave. On a good swell, it is comparable to Fiji’s Cloudbreak in terms of speed and length. This one should strictly be kept for experts as the reef does not forgive. Being a direct neighbor to Bali, Lombok is easily accessible by air or ferry. You will experience a total different culture considering this island is mostly Islamic instead of Hindu.

The island of Lombok also remains much less crowded than Bali in terms of surfing population which is another great advantage of hopping over to this side for a surf trip.

When to go: The best time to surf in Lombok, Indonesia is from April to September when the swell becomes more consistent. It also happens to be the country’s dry season.

4. Skeleton Bay, Namibia

Hands down, the longest barrel in the world. Yes, when it works, Skeleton bay is indeed the longest barrel in the world and quite a tricky one to ride, too. Located off the Namibian coast, Skeleton bay is a very hollow wave (and heavy on large swells) breaking on a shallow sand bank. When conditions line up, you are almost guaranteed the ride of a lifetime.

However, the perfect conditions for this ride to happen are pretty fickle and tend to be quite rare. Also, its remote location make it very hard to just go to for a regular surf check. People go up from South Africa when the charts look awesome and this trip has to be a full commitment, nothing less.

When to go: The best time to surf Jeffrey’s Bay (JBay), South Africa is from June to September.

3. Cloudbreak, Fiji

Cloudbreak is a world class reef break located near the island of Tavarua, in Fiji. This very fast and hollow left is a perfect set up to get some of the longest tube rides in the world. However, such a wave definitely does not forgive and should only be kept for experts.

When to go: Although surfing is possible all year in Fiji, the best conditions are to be found from May to November.

2. Teahupo’o, French Polynesia

To many, this is the most picture-perfect and amazing spot in the world. Almost pulled from a fiction movie.

Teahupo’o is an incredibly hollow and powerful wave that breaks right on top of a shallow and very sharp reef giving place to the best barrel you will ever see. To surf it, you can paddle out for about 15 minutes. However, if you wanna see it or take a picture of a surfer getting spat out of the hole, you will need to hire a boat as the spot is quite far from shore.

The whole scenery is absolutely unreal with crystal clear water and an amazing coastline defined by mountains and palm trees.

When to go: The best time to surf Teahupo’o is from May to October for significantly more consistent and bigger waves than the rest of the year.

Situated in Half Moon Bay, Mavericks is one of the most feared and respected big wave surf spots in the world. It’s cold, sharky, and capable of producing waves over 60 feet.

Unlike many big wave locations, Mavericks is a paddle-in spot, demanding precise timing and incredible bravery from surfers as they take off on massive, moving mountains of water.

3. Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Teahupo’o, located on the south-east side of Tahiti, is home to arguably the heaviest and most picturesque wave ever surfed. On big swells, this reef break becomes a tow-in monster, pitching square barrels over razor-sharp coral.

• April to October (Summer): The south shore comes to life with consistent south swells. Waikiki and Ala Moana offer clean, mellow waves which are ideal for beginners and longboarders.

Getting there

Honolulu is the only way in. You can fly from any major Hawaiian island or from the mainland. To get around, hiring a car is definitely the best option even if the bus system is pretty cheap and reliable.

Safety/things to know

Hawaii doesn’t have a reputation for no reason. The waves can be very big and mean with swells coming from nowhere and doubling in size in a matter of minutes. Be very careful. If in doubt, don’t go out.

Pipeline/backdoor

Pipeline is possibly the world’s most famous wave attracting surfers and tourists from all around the globe. In winter, North-westerly swells hit the shallow tabletop reef in dramatic fashion creating a perfect barreling A-frame. The left is Pipeline while the right is called Backdoor.
