When it comes to surfing, the thought of conquering some of the world’s most dangerous waves is irresistible for adrenaline junkies and professional surfers alike. Surfing dangerous waves isn’t just about skill; it’s about survival.

Whether you’re an aspiring big-wave surfer or simply fascinated by nature’s raw power, these waves and surf spots will inspire you to respect the ocean. From the shallow reefs of Teahupo’o to the record-breaking swells of Nazaré, each location presents its own unique set of challenges.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Teahupo’o is frequently listed as one of the most dangerous waves in the world. This terrifying break is known for its glassy yet heavy waves that slam surfers down on shallow reefs. The wave at Teahupo’o breaks below sea level and forms a perfect barrel. However, but the sheer weight of the lip and proximity to sharp coral make it one of the most dangerous surfing spots on the planet.

Why it’s dangerous: Shallow reef, heavy and hollow wave, sharp and live coral.

Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore is where legends are made, and careers can be ended. This world-famous wave is as dangerous as it is iconic, forming perfectly hollow barrels that break over a table-top volcanic reef just a few feet below the surface. Pipeline is home to some of the deadliest surfing wipeouts in history, making it a prime example of a dangerous wave.

Why it’s dangerous: Shallow reef, powerful barrels, huge winter swells.

Read our surfing guide to Oahu, Hawaii

Nazaré, Portgual

Nazaré is the biggest surf spot ever surfed and also a very dangerous one. Without jet ski assist, many surfers would have lost their life to the strong currents of Nazaré. This wave is created by an underwater canyon which turns huge swells into massive 100ft+ waves.

Why it’s dangerous: Massive wave height, fast-moving water, strong currents, and unpredictable conditions.

Located on the southern coast of Tasmania, is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable surf spots in the world. Known for its “mutant” waves, Shipstern is infamous for producing some of the gnarliest, step-laden waves in surfing. What sets this wave apart is the way it folds into multiple sections, creating sudden “steps” within the wave that can throw surfers off balance. These unpredictable formations, along with the cold water and remote location, make Shipstern Bluff a beast only for the brave.

Why it’s dangerous: Cold water, unpredictable breaking pattern, sharks, cliffs.

Mavericks, located off the coast of Northern California, is infamous for its dangerous waves and icy cold water. The waves here are large and powerful, often crashing down with bone-rattling force. Wiping out at Mavericks can mean being held underwater for multiple wave sets, making it one of the most feared surf spots. If that was not enough, Mavericks is also one of the sharkiest surf spot in California…

Why it’s dangerous: Cold water, sharks, unpredictable swells and massive waves.

Hawaii is the holy land in the surfing world. Home to many of the world’s most iconic surf spots like Pipeline, Pea’hi and Honolua Bay, Hawaii should be on every surfer’s bucket list.

Not only does Hawaii have great waves, it also raised some of the best and most influential surfers of all time such as Duke Kahanamoku, Eddie Aikau, Andy Irons, Carissa Moore and John John Florence.

Read: How to choose the right Hawaiian Island for a surf trip?

Although Hawaii has some of the biggest waves on Earth, surfers of all skill levels can enjoy a surf trip to Hawaii and truly experience the aloha spirit.

When to go

The best time to go on a surf trip to Hawaii depends on your skill level. The winter months tend to provide massive swells on the north and west sides of all Hawaiian islands while summer months offer nicer waves down south.

Either way, Hawaii has a 360-degree exposure to swells, which allows surfers to find different surfing conditions within a small driving distance. Therefore, if waves are too big up north, you may find a nice and sheltered surf spot down south with smaller conditions.

How to decide which Hawaiian island to visit

The big question when it comes to planning a surf trip to Hawaii is deciding which island you should visit. Although all four major Hawaiian islands are absolutely gorgeous and filled with surf spots, they all are unique in some way and offer different experiences for surfers.

Oahu

The island of Oahu is the most populated and also most visited island in Hawaii which led to a strong development of its touristic infrastructure.

Every winter, pro surfers from all around the world gather on the North Shore of Oahu to compete in some of the world’s most prestigious surf contests.

If you are looking for a convenient surfing experience, mixed with cultural visits and good night life, Oahu is a great option.

Maui

The island of Maui is a very versatile island, offering just as much outdoor activities as touristic attractions. Surfing opportunities are endless on Maui, whether you want some big wave action in Ho’okipa, Jaws and Honolua Bay or some mellow waves in Lahaina or Kihei.

Read our complete surfing guide to Maui, Hawaii

Besides surfing, every day on Maui is an adventure. You can either watch sunrise on top of Mount Haleakala, hike Iao Valley or swim with turtles in Honolua Bay. Those are just a few of the many things to do on Maui!

For a mix of adventure, surf, outdoor activities and a glimpse of nightlife, without getting caught up in the city chaos, Maui is a perfect island for your surf trip.

Kauai, also known as the Garden Isle, is a paradise for outdoor lovers and adventure seekers. In fact, not much happens here after sunset which is just a good time to recharge for the next day!

Surfing on Kauai is a very special experience. Given how small the island is, you always are one short drive away from the best surfing conditions out there. Beginners can also find surfing lessons at Hanalei Pier or Poi’pu while more advanced surfers will find great challenges at Tunnels or Hanalei Point. The island of Kauai is a true natural gem with surf spots that will be less crowded than what you will find on Oahu or Maui.

To get away from the crowds and focus on surfing, hiking and chasing sunsets, Kauai is the way!

Big Island

As its name implies, Big Island is the largest Hawaiian island but it is usually overlooked by surfers for some reasons. However, big island still has some amazing waves and only a fraction of the crowd that you will find on Oahu or Maui.

Usually, people will base themselves in Kona or Hilo which both provide good access to many surf spots. However, most popular waves on Big Island are near Kona, on the island’s west side.

What to know before surfing in Hawaii

Hawaii is a special place that gives a lot to its people and visitors. However, Hawaii can also take everything back in the blink of an eye. Locals are well aware of it but visitors often are too naïve to realize until it’s too late.

When surfing in Hawaii, always respect the ocean and your own limits as conditions are very unique and unpredictable. Also, respect locals in order to be respected in return. Hawaii is an amazing place with truly generous and welcoming locals. Don’t take it for granted and make sure to give back to the island and its community.

With all the amazing waves and surf spots around the globe, it definitely is not easy to narrow it down to the 10 best waves on Earth. However, here is our list of the 10 surf spots which, in our opinion, all have a little something special that makes them stand out from the rest…

Being a bit far from land, the only way to get access to the wave is by boat which are offered by a few surfing companies, the main one being the Pohnpei Surf Club.

Teahupo’o is the most perfect barrel on the planet, period. Whether it is from 4 feet or 25 feet+, this wave will stay just as hollow and clean. At first, what may look like a closeout, suddenly offers an end section that spits you out in the channel for a 4-5 seconds ride maximum. However, this wave is not about length, it is about the thrill. Given its remote location, Teahupo’o remains much less crowded than Pipeline and the town is still very raw.

It was pretty natural to award the number one spot to the Queen of all waves, Pipeline. Not only is this wave totally insane, it has a deep and magical history. Many great surfers grew up on this wave to later be crowned as world champions on that same wave. Pipeline is a hollow and powerful Hawaiian reef break that offers consistent and perfect tube rides, wave after wave.

Although it is considered as one of the best waves on Earth, it most definitely is also the most dangerous one. Many surfers have suffered serious injuries on this reef, some of them paying the cost of life. That doesn’t stop all the professional surfers from heading down to Pipeline every winter to battle in the Pipe Masters and get ready for the next season.

To kick off this countdown, here is a sweet left wave located on the north coast of Spain, just under 2 hours away from San Sebastian.

Mundaka is a dreamy point break with a few hollow sections allowing to either go straight down the line or stall in the pit for some cover, if desired. This wave is considered as one of the best surf spots in Europe and works best from low to mid tide. It is also, arguably, the best wave in Spain.

In our countdown, Mundaka is the best left-hand wave in all of Europe!

Chicama is known to be nothing less than the longest wave in the world. Hands down, the longest barrel in the world. Yes, when it works, Skeleton bay is indeed the longest barrel in the world and quite a tricky one to ride, too. Located off the Namibian coast, Skeleton bay is a very hollow wave (and heavy on large swells) breaking on a shallow sand bank. When conditions line up, you are almost guaranteed the ride of a lifetime.

However, the perfect conditions for this ride to happen are pretty fickle and tend to be quite rare. Also, its remote location make it very hard to just go to for a regular surf check. People go up from South Africa when the charts look awesome and this trip has to be a full commitment, nothing less.

To many, this is the most picture-perfect and amazing spot in the world. Almost pulled from a fiction movie.

Teahupo’o is an incredibly hollow and powerful wave that breaks right on top of a shallow and very sharp reef giving place to the best barrel you will ever see. To surf it, you can paddle out for about 15 minutes. However, if you wanna see it or take a picture of a surfer getting spat out of the hole, you will need to hire a boat as the spot is quite far from shore.

The whole scenery is absolutely unreal with crystal clear water and an amazing coastline defined by mountains and palm trees.

When to go: The best time to surf Teahupo’o is from May to October for significantly more consistent and bigger waves than the rest of the year.

Pipeline is arguably the world’s best wave and also the most popular surf spot.

Located on the North Shore of Oahu, this A-frame reef break is known to offer some of the best barrels and is also hosting the World Surf League on their final leg of the world championship. This wave should also be attacked by experts only as it remains the world’s deadliest spot.

Its proximity to the beach also makes Pipeline one of the best wave to simply watch from shore and on a big winter swell you will sometimes feel the beach shaking on a big set.

When to go: The best time to surf Pipeline and the whole north shore of Oahu is from November to April, during the Hawaiian winter season.

Summary

Oahu is nothing less than the world’s most famous surfing destination. Home of the sport of surfing itself. Filled with stories and legends, a surf trip to Oahu has a lot to offer on every aspect.

Read: Which Hawaiian island should you chose for a surf trip?

The surf on Oahu already has a very solid reputation. Anybody who is the tiniest bit into surfing has to at least watch a northwesterly winter swell roll onto the north shore. Picture perfect Pipeline spiting out one of many professional surfers who decide to spend winter down there to try to tame the monster and practice their tube riding skills.

Although Oahu has one of the deadliest wave on Earth, it is also pretty friendly for beginners who want to get into the sport. That’s the good thing about islands. You can have 20 feet waves on one side of the island and 3 feet waves on the other side.
