Shipstern Bluff, Australia

Located on the southern coast of Tasmania, is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable surf spots in the world. Known for its “mutant” waves, Shipstern is infamous for producing some of the gnarliest, step-laden waves in surfing. 10. Pasta Point, Maldives

Just a short ferry ride from Male, the country’s capital city is a private island called Dhonveli. This beautiful island is home to the Maldives’ best and most consistent wave, Pasta Point. Getting to surf this high-end reef break with only you and a few other surfers out (30 people max.) is something that can’t really be found these days. If you cannot afford to stay at the Dhonveli Resort, there are a few similar “public” waves in the area like Honky’s and Sultan’s.

9. P-Pass, Micronesia

This one is probably the least known in the whole countdown but it totally deserves its rank. P-Pass is located on the Federated States of Micronesia‘s main island, Pohnpei. It is a powerful and hollow right-hand wave that was surfed by many of the world’s best surfers either on strike missions or posing for magazines. 

Being a bit far from land, the only way to get access to the wave is by boat which are offered by a few surfing companies, the main one being the Pohnpei Surf Club.

8. Lance’s Right, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

Lance’s Right is located in the Mentawai Island chain which is becoming the new surfing mecca. More and more surfers discover the potential of the waves of this region, Lance’s Right being the main attraction. This wave is a hollow and fast right-hand break that will challenge even the best surfers out there.

7. Superbank, Gold Coast, Australia

The Gold Coast is a huge surfing scene in Australia, mostly because of Superbank, a man-enhanced sandy point break that provides great waves any day of the year. Even when conditions are bad (onshore wind and messy swells), there will still be something to catch out there. However, when conditions become epic, like what we saw with the last few cyclones, this wave breaks all the way from Snapper Rocks to Kirra for the ride of a lifetime.

6. Honolua Bay, Maui, Hawaii

Located in the heart of West Maui, Honolua Bay is a consistent and long right-hand wave that has some barreling sections as well as long carving walls. Usually lighting up on a westerly swell, Honolua Bay attracts a pretty big crowd being by far the best option to surf on Maui’s west side.

5. Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia

Uluwatu is Bali‘s most popular and picturesque surf spot, located at the bottom of some very impressive cliffs. This wave typically has three different takeoff spots which link together on good swells forming an extra long wave with a few cover-up sections and some straight walls to pump some speed. Crowds are usually a big factor, but the whole setup is just too good to skip.

2. Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Teahupo’o is the most perfect barrel on the planet, period. Whether it is from 4 feet or 25 feet+, this wave will stay just as hollow and clean. At first, what may look like a closeout, suddenly offers an end section that spits you out in the channel for a 4-5 seconds ride maximum. However, this wave is not about length, it is about the thrill. Given its remote location, Teahupo’o remains much less crowded than Pipeline and the town is still very raw.

The general setup is also gorgeous with crystal clear water and a jaw-dropping landscape shaped by volcanic mountains in the back. Be ready to touch the reef and break a few boards.

1. Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii

It was pretty natural to award the number one spot to the Queen of all waves, Pipeline. Not only is this wave totally insane, it has a deep and magical history. Many great surfers grew up on this wave to later be crowned as world champions on that same wave. Pipeline is a hollow and powerful Hawaiian reef break that offers consistent and perfect tube rides, wave after wave.

Although it is considered as one of the best waves on Earth, it most definitely is also the most dangerous one. Many surfers have suffered serious injuries on this reef, some of them paying the cost of life. That doesn’t stop all the professional surfers from heading down to Pipeline every winter to battle in the Pipe Masters and get ready for the next season.

10. Mundaka, Spain

To kick off this countdown, here is a sweet left wave located on the north coast of Spain, just under 2 hours away from San Sebastian.

Mundaka is a dreamy point break with a few hollow sections allowing to either go straight down the line or stall in the pit for some cover, if desired. This wave is considered as one of the best surf spots in Europe and works best from low to mid tide. It is also, arguably, the best wave in Spain.

9. Pavones, Costa Rica

Pavones is the longest wave in Costa Rica and probably in all of Central America.

Located on the very southern tip of Costa Rica, next to the border with Panama, this wave works perfectly on a dominant southwesterly swell that wraps around the point peeling for ages.

Unlike Tamarindo or Santa Teresa, Pavones is a bit of a pain to get to as it is very remote and underdeveloped. However, the trip will definitely be worth it with the reward of potentially catching the longest wave of your life.

When to go: Costa Rica is good all year round for surfing but the best season is from April to November when swells are more consistent and sizable. It also happens to be the rainy season in Central America.

8. Chicama, Peru

Chicama is known to be nothing less than the longest wave in the world. On a good day, you can surf this left for almost a mile and the locals even started using boats to take the surfers back to the take off zone instead of having to paddle all the way back. Located on the dry coastline of Peru, Chicama is pretty mellow and should suit a wide range of surfing levels.

When to go: The best time to surf Chicama is from April to October, during the austral winter months, for better chances of seeing a nice SSW swell peel onto the point.

7. Raglan, New Zealand

First featured in Endless Summer, Raglan quickly became New Zealand’s surfing capital as well as one of the best lefts on the planet. 6. Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia

One of Bali’s most iconic surf spot, Uluwatu is blessed with a unique set up both in and out of the water. First, to get to the wave, you must come down those stunning cliffs where bars, shops and restaurants are packed with surfers and visitors enjoying an after-surf Bintang or simply having a Balinese coffee watching the sunset.

Then, the wave itself is a challenging left with a few barreling sections and about three different takeoff spots. On a good day, they will all connect into one long wall of water with the potential of catching the wave of your life.

When to go: The best time to surf Uluwatu, on Bali’s west coast is from April to September as the winds are favorable and swells are more consistent.

5. Desert Point, Lombok, Indonesia

Desert point is a very fast and challenging barreling wave. On a good swell, it is comparable to Fiji’s Cloudbreak in terms of speed and length. This one should strictly be kept for experts as the reef does not forgive. Being a direct neighbor to Bali, Lombok is easily accessible by air or ferry. You will experience a total different culture considering this island is mostly Islamic instead of Hindu.

The island of Lombok also remains much less crowded than Bali in terms of surfing population which is another great advantage of hopping over to this side for a surf trip.

When to go: The best time to surf in Lombok, Indonesia is from April to September when the swell becomes more consistent. It also happens to be the country’s dry season.

4. Skeleton Bay, Namibia

Hands down, the longest barrel in the world. Yes, when it works, Skeleton bay is indeed the longest barrel in the world and quite a tricky one to ride, too. Located off the Namibian coast, Skeleton bay is a very hollow wave (and heavy on large swells) breaking on a shallow sand bank. When conditions line up, you are almost guaranteed the ride of a lifetime.

However, the perfect conditions for this ride to happen are pretty fickle and tend to be quite rare. Also, its remote location make it very hard to just go to for a regular surf check. People go up from South Africa when the charts look awesome and this trip has to be a full commitment, nothing less.

When to go: The best time to surf Jeffrey’s Bay (JBay), South Africa is from June to September.

3. Cloudbreak, Fiji

Cloudbreak is a world class reef break located near the island of Tavarua, in Fiji. This very fast and hollow left is a perfect set up to get some of the longest tube rides in the world. However, such a wave definitely does not forgive and should only be kept for experts.

When to go: Although surfing is possible all year in Fiji, the best conditions are to be found from May to November.

2. Teahupo’o, French Polynesia

To many, this is the most picture-perfect and amazing spot in the world. Almost pulled from a fiction movie.

Teahupo’o is an incredibly hollow and powerful wave that breaks right on top of a shallow and very sharp reef giving place to the best barrel you will ever see. To surf it, you can paddle out for about 15 minutes. However, if you wanna see it or take a picture of a surfer getting spat out of the hole, you will need to hire a boat as the spot is quite far from shore.

The whole scenery is absolutely unreal with crystal clear water and an amazing coastline defined by mountains and palm trees.

When to go: The best time to surf Teahupo’o is from May to October for significantly more consistent and bigger waves than the rest of the year.

Pipeline is arguably the world’s best wave and also the most popular surf spot.

Located on the North Shore of Oahu, this A-frame reef break is known to offer some of the best barrels and is also hosting the World Surf League on their final leg of the world championship. This wave should also be attacked by experts only as it remains the world’s deadliest spot.

Its proximity to the beach also makes Pipeline one of the best wave to simply watch from shore and on a big winter swell you will sometimes feel the beach shaking on a big set.

When Is the Best Time to Surf in Tahiti?

The ideal time to surf in Tahiti depends on the type of waves you’re chasing:

• November to April (Summer): Expect warm, humid weather with consistent north swells. This season is best for surfing Papeno’o and other north-facing breaks. South swells are smaller but still show up regularly.

• May to October (Winter): This is the prime surf season for the south-facing reef breaks like Teahupo’o, Vairao, and Taapuna. Powerful southwest swells light up the coast, and weather is cooler and drier.

Whether you’re a seasoned charger or an intermediate surfer, there are great waves year-round in Tahiti.

Where to stay in Tahiti

On the south side of Tahiti Iti, near Teahupo’o, there aren’t that many accommodation options other than local homestays. You can stay at Vanira Lodge which is a beautiful place greatly located next to Teahupo’o

Near Papeete, the best place to stay on a budget is the Mahana Hostel and Backpackers which is very nicely located, down town. For more comfort, Te Moana is a good option further south.

Tahiti Surf Spots

Teahupo’o

Without a doubt, Teahupo’o is Tahiti’s most famous break and also the heaviest one. Only a 15 minutes paddle away from the point, it is the closest wave to shore in this south-eastern area of the island. Teahupo’o breaks on a very shallow and extremely sharp reef making anyone pay for their mistakes. Should be kept for advanced surfers. On a good south westerly swell, Teahupo’o is a short and hollow barrel with one of the best views on Earth. At Teahupo’o, if the swell is too westerly, close outs are more frequent as the west bowl breaks with the rest of the wave.

Papeno’o

Vairao

10 minutes up the road before reaching Teahupo’o is the pass of Vairao. You will need a boat or paddle for about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the break. It is probably the longest wave in the area breaking over a very shallow reef, even more so than Teahupo’o. However, Vairao doesn’t have the same power as Chopes…

Getting there

Up until 2018, only 2 airlines would offer flights to Papeete: Air Tahiti Nui and Frenchbee. Recently, United airlines started offering flights from San Francisco and Hawaiian airlines is coming in from Honolulu making it more accessible for travelers.

Safety/things to know

• Waves in Tahiti are still quite untouched. Make sure you respect the locals even more than anywhere else. They are VERY welcoming if you respect them and if you don’t, you better jump on the next plane because you won’t catch many more waves.
• Most breaks on the north side are accessible just by paddling. However, on the south side, most breaks require at least a 30 minute paddle. Best access is definitely by boat.
• Most surf spots on the south side, including Teahupo’o are breaking over sharp and shallow coral reef. Bring a good first aid kit.
