Lombok

Lombok is Bali’s direct neighbor to the east and obviously gets the same unique swell exposure and consistency. Therefore, both of Lombok’s south and east sides are filled with amazing surf spots with only a fraction of Bali’s crowds which make the journey well worth it.

If there are many high level waves in Lombok like Desert Point and Mawi Beach, surfers can also find some gentle waves in Senggigi or even near Gili Islands where swells don’t reach as directly. Sumbawa

On the same stretch of islands called the Lesser Sunda Islands, Sumbawa comes right after Lombok and is another amazing place to surf in Indonesia. Sumbawa is typically more suitable for advanced surfers since most surf spots on the island are reef breaks which tend to offer quite radical surfing conditions.

One thing to note is Sumbawa is a massive island with two airports and two distinct surfing areas which are quite far away from each other. Therefore, you may want to stick with either West Sumbawa or the Lakey Peak region. In West Sumbawa alone, you will find at least a dozen of world-class surf spots such as Yoyo’s, SuperSuck, Scar Reef and Northern Rights

Java

Java is Indonesia’s most populated island but it also is a great place to surf in Indonesia. In fact, the whole south side of Java is exposed to consistent waves and many surf spots have made their way to become legendary. One of them is G-Land, on the very south-eastern tip of Java, which is one of Indonesia’s best waves.

1.  Uluwatu, Bali

Uluwatu is a world-class wave located on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula right by the cliffs of Uluwatu. This reef break produces long and perfect left-hand waves that can go on for as long as a few hundred meters.

2. Desert Point, Lombok

Right after Lombok comes Sumbawa, just another ferry away. This island is more remote, less crowded and less developed than Bali and Lombok. Sumbawa also has GREAT waves! The island is pretty wide and has two separate airports and surfing areas. Lakey Peak is on the east side of Sumbawa and is a fantastic A-frame reef break.

The Mentawai Islands have dozens of world-class reef breaks that make this archipelago a true surfing mecca. Although the Mentawais are more remote and hard of access, the hassle is totally worth it and most trip to the Mentawais turn out to be the surf trip of a lifetime!

5. Padang Padang, Bali

Padang Padang is another flagship surf spot on Bali, located in Bukit’s Peninsula. This left-hand wave is a hollow reef break, perfect to practice some barrel rides or simply play with a long and steep wall.

6. Yoyo’s, Sumbawa

Yoyo’s is a super consistent wave located in Sekongkang Bay, which is known for being a swell magnet. The bay is positioned in a way to catch any swell from the south-west and produce perfect waves. Yoyo’s is a right-hand reef break that works better in the morning from mid to high tide.

7. Mawi Beach, Lombok

Another nice wave on Lombok is Mawi Beach which is probably the most consistent surf spot on the island. Mawi works at all stages of the tide and breaks left and right, making it a really fun surf spot. Mawi Beach is located about 25 minutes from Kuta and a few other breaks are on the way.

8. G-Land, Java

G-Land, on the island of Java is another world-class left-hand point break that produces a perfect, long and sometimes hollow wave. Good news is G-Land is on the very eastern tip of Java which makes it just a small journey from Bali.

9. Scar Reef, Sumbawa

West Sumbawa is very rich in waves and Scar Reef is another gem of a surf spot that can be found in the area. This punchy reef break is very critical and thrilling for the barrel lovers! Scar Reef isn’t too far of SuperSuck which is another iconic reef break in West Sumbawa.

10. Nihiwatu, Sumba

Nihiwatu is not a very known surf spot compared to the rest of our list, but believe it or not, it is one of Kelly Slater’s favorite wave in the world! The island of Sumba is right beneath Sumbawa and is a very raw and underdeveloped Indonesian island that is perfect for the most adventurous surfers out there. Nihiwatu is just a perfect left-hand wave, mostly uncrowded and super consistent.

10. Pasta Point, Maldives

Just a short ferry ride from Male, the country’s capital city is a private island called Dhonveli. This beautiful island is home to the Maldives’ best and most consistent wave, Pasta Point. Getting to surf this high-end reef break with only you and a few other surfers out (30 people max.) is something that can’t really be found these days. If you cannot afford to stay at the Dhonveli Resort, there are a few similar “public” waves in the area like Honky’s and Sultan’s.

9. P-Pass, Micronesia

This one is probably the least known in the whole countdown but it totally deserves its rank. P-Pass is located on the Federated States of Micronesia‘s main island, Pohnpei. It is a powerful and hollow right-hand wave that was surfed by many of the world’s best surfers either on strike missions or posing for magazines. 

Being a bit far from land, the only way to get access to the wave is by boat which are offered by a few surfing companies, the main one being the Pohnpei Surf Club.

8. Lance’s Right, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

Lance’s Right is located in the Mentawai Island chain which is becoming the new surfing mecca. More and more surfers discover the potential of the waves of this region, Lance’s Right being the main attraction. This wave is a hollow and fast right-hand break that will challenge even the best surfers out there.

7. Superbank, Gold Coast, Australia

The Gold Coast is a huge surfing scene in Australia, mostly because of Superbank, a man-enhanced sandy point break that provides great waves any day of the year. Even when conditions are bad (onshore wind and messy swells), there will still be something to catch out there. However, when conditions become epic, like what we saw with the last few cyclones, this wave breaks all the way from Snapper Rocks to Kirra for the ride of a lifetime.

6. Honolua Bay, Maui, Hawaii

Located in the heart of West Maui, Honolua Bay is a consistent and long right-hand wave that has some barreling sections as well as long carving walls. Usually lighting up on a westerly swell, Honolua Bay attracts a pretty big crowd being by far the best option to surf on Maui’s west side.

2. Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Teahupo’o is the most perfect barrel on the planet, period. Whether it is from 4 feet or 25 feet+, this wave will stay just as hollow and clean. At first, what may look like a closeout, suddenly offers an end section that spits you out in the channel for a 4-5 seconds ride maximum. However, this wave is not about length, it is about the thrill. Given its remote location, Teahupo’o remains much less crowded than Pipeline and the town is still very raw.

The general setup is also gorgeous with crystal clear water and a jaw-dropping landscape shaped by volcanic mountains in the back. Be ready to touch the reef and break a few boards.

1. Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii

It was pretty natural to award the number one spot to the Queen of all waves, Pipeline. Not only is this wave totally insane, it has a deep and magical history. Many great surfers grew up on this wave to later be crowned as world champions on that same wave. Pipeline is a hollow and powerful Hawaiian reef break that offers consistent and perfect tube rides, wave after wave.

Although it is considered as one of the best waves on Earth, it most definitely is also the most dangerous one. Many surfers have suffered serious injuries on this reef, some of them paying the cost of life. 8. Chicama, Peru

Chicama is known to be nothing less than the longest wave in the world. On a good day, you can surf this left for almost a mile and the locals even started using boats to take the surfers back to the take off zone instead of having to paddle all the way back. Located on the dry coastline of Peru, Chicama is pretty mellow and should suit a wide range of surfing levels.

Then, the wave itself is a challenging left with a few barreling sections and about three different takeoff spots. On a good day, they will all connect into one long wall of water with the potential of catching the wave of your life.

When to go: The best time to surf Uluwatu, on Bali’s west coast is from April to September as the winds are favorable and swells are more consistent.

5. Desert Point, Lombok, Indonesia

Desert point is a very fast and challenging barreling wave. On a good swell, it is comparable to Fiji’s Cloudbreak in terms of speed and length. This one should strictly be kept for experts as the reef does not forgive. Being a direct neighbor to Bali, Lombok is easily accessible by air or ferry. You will experience a total different culture considering this island is mostly Islamic instead of Hindu.

The island of Lombok also remains much less crowded than Bali in terms of surfing population which is another great advantage of hopping over to this side for a surf trip.

When to go: The best time to surf in Lombok, Indonesia is from April to September when the swell becomes more consistent. It also happens to be the country’s dry season.

4. Skeleton Bay, Namibia

Hands down, the longest barrel in the world. Yes, when it works, Skeleton bay is indeed the longest barrel in the world and quite a tricky one to ride, too. Located off the Namibian coast, Skeleton bay is a very hollow wave (and heavy on large swells) breaking on a shallow sand bank. When conditions line up, you are almost guaranteed the ride of a lifetime.

However, the perfect conditions for this ride to happen are pretty fickle and tend to be quite rare. Also, its remote location make it very hard to just go to for a regular surf check. People go up from South Africa when the charts look awesome and this trip has to be a full commitment, nothing less.

When to go: The best time to surf Jeffrey’s Bay (JBay), South Africa is from June to September.

3. Cloudbreak, Fiji

Cloudbreak is a world class reef break located near the island of Tavarua, in Fiji. This very fast and hollow left is a perfect set up to get some of the longest tube rides in the world. However, such a wave definitely does not forgive and should only be kept for experts.

When to go: Although surfing is possible all year in Fiji, the best conditions are to be found from May to November.

2. Teahupo’o, French Polynesia

To many, this is the most picture-perfect and amazing spot in the world. Almost pulled from a fiction movie.

Teahupo’o is an incredibly hollow and powerful wave that breaks right on top of a shallow and very sharp reef giving place to the best barrel you will ever see. To surf it, you can paddle out for about 15 minutes. However, if you wanna see it or take a picture of a surfer getting spat out of the hole, you will need to hire a boat as the spot is quite far from shore.

The whole scenery is absolutely unreal with crystal clear water and an amazing coastline defined by mountains and palm trees.

When to go: The best time to surf Teahupo’o is from May to October for significantly more consistent and bigger waves than the rest of the year.

1. Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii

Pipeline is arguably the world’s best wave and also the most popular surf spot.

Located on the North Shore of Oahu, this A-frame reef break is known to offer some of the best barrels and is also hosting the World Surf League on their final leg of the world championship. This wave should also be attacked by experts only as it remains the world’s deadliest spot.

When to surf Bali

The best time to surf Bali, is from May to October which is when the Indian Ocean pushes consistent ground swells towards Indonesia. Winds are usually light and offshore on the west side of Bali during that period.

From November to April, conditions will be better on the east side at surf spots like Keramas. It is therefore possible to surf throughout the whole year in Bali.

Where to stay in Bali

On Bali’s west side, there are two main areas that are great to establish yourself on a surf trip to Bali. The first one is Uluwatu, down in the Bukit’s Peninsula. Uluwatu is strategically positioned close to many of Bali’s best waves, including Padang Padang, Impossibles, Balangan and obviously Uluwatu.

Surf spots in Bali

Uluwatu

The whole west coast of Bukit is packed with world-class surf spots, Uluwatu being the main attraction. A dreamy left-hand wave with several different peaks that can connect on a decent swell and produce a long, powerful and challenging wave. There are also a few hollow sections to pull in and test your tube-riding skills.

Keramas

Most popular break on Bali’s east side, Keramas is also a very consistent, high-level surf spot. Located on a beautiful black sand beach, Keramas offers a hollow, yet maneuverable wave breaking on an exposed reef. Keramas has been hosting professional surfing events from the World Surf League in the past and is a great place to check out.

Getting there and around

The most common way into Bali is from Denpasar International Airport, located next to Kuta. You can also reach the island via a ferry from Java or Lombok. To get around in Bali, renting a motorcycle is probably the best way as it gives you a lot of freedom and remains a fairly cheap option. Many motorcycles also have a surfboard rack to carry your equipment. Make sure to bring an international driving license in case they pull you over for a check up and be very careful driving around as things do get hectic.

Safety/things to know

• Visas on arrival are only valid for 30 days for most passports. If you want a second 30 days, you need to apply in advance. For visa information, visit the Indonesian government’s website.
• Crowds get very heavy in Bali especially during the high surf season. You may want to consider visiting the neighboring islands of Lombok, Nusa Lembongan or Sumbawa which are less busy.
• Foodborne illnesses are frequent in Bali. Bring some electrolytes and be careful what you eat and drink.
