Anchor Point is one of Morocco’s most famous surf spots due to its consistency and overall wave quality. Maui is a popular Hawaiian island when it comes to surfing thanks to world-class surf spots like Honolua Bay and Pe’ahi. However, Maui still has some beginner friendly waves and many other hidden surf spots. 

Here are 4 of the best waves and surf spots on the island of Maui.

Ho’okipa 

On the north side of the island, just a couple miles away from the historic town of Pa’ia is a beach called Ho’okipa which is known as one of the best kitesurfing beaches in the world. 

Ho’okipa also has some great waves for regular surfing and through the winter months, considerably big swells run into Ho’okipa. This surf spot is better for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Lahaina Harbor

On the west side is the once beautiful town of Lahaina which was heartbreakingly destroyed by a wildfire in the summer of 2023. In front of Lahaina Harbor is a beautiful reef break that works both on south and north swells which means it will work throughout most of the year.

Lahaina remains Maui’s most accessible and popular surf spot.

Honolua Bay

Honolua Bay is the best wave and surf spot in Maui with a world-class point break that produces incredibly consistent waves throughout the winter months.

In order to work, Honolua Bay needs a good northwesterly swell and it will become a long wave that offers great walls to practice some carves as well as a few barreling sections.

Pe’ahi (Jaws)

Jaws is a big wave surf spot located on the north side of Maui about 15 minutes away from the town of Pa’ia. On a big north swell, chargers from all over the world rush into Maui to paddle into a giant wave at Pe’ahi.

This wave should only be surfed by extremely experienced big wave surfers with the proper equipment and safety teams. From the cliffs, anyone can have a nice view of the show while staying dry and safe.

Gold Coast, Queensland

Gold Coast is another popular surfing destination on the east coast of australia that attracts a huge amount of tourists every year. On the southern end of Gold Coast, near Coolangatta, is located most of the surfing potential with one of Australia’s best waves, Superbank.

This man-made sand bar offers a long and punchy right-hand wave which will suit any type of surfers. On big cyclone swells, Superbank can turn into a long world-class barrel while the summer days will offer mellow longboard waves, perfect for beginners.

Noosa, Queensland

Located on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Noosa is a small holiday/surf town that is extremely pretty, with a bit less of the “hipstery” vibe that you get in Byron Bay.

Waves in Noosa are great for learning due to their consistency and mellowness which will allow you to slowly get comfortable in the water. Crowds will also be more reasonable than what you can find on the Gold Coast or in Byron.

Rainbow Beach, Queensland

Rainbow Beach is just a bit north of Noosa and will be even less crowded. Just at the end of the beach is a spot called Double Island Point which is one of the World’s longest waves.

A couple of surf schools are to be found in Rainbow Beach and they will drive you to Double Island Point for a day that you will never forget.

If you are looking for a place to settle and go surf by yourself as much as you want, be aware that waves here may not be as accessible as they can be further down south.

Sydney, New South Wales

Sydney’s beaches offer a very nice setup for beginners to learn how to surf especially for those who are seeking a city/professional life while being able to enjoy the ocean.

Manly Beach is the most popular surf spot near Sydney, but definitely not the only one. While most of Sydney beaches do require a bit of work to get access to, the trip is definitely worth it.

Torquay, Victoria

Home to one of Australia’s most iconic surf spot, Bells Beach, Torquay is a small surfing village that will charm anyone paying a visit.

Only an hour south of Melbourne, this surf town has waves for surfers of any skill level and many surf schools are present to help beginners get into the sport.

Every year, Torquay hosts the World Surf League for an event that became one of the most prestigious on tour.

Western Australia

Western Australia has some amazing surf that is usually known for being bigger and requiring a better skill level than what you can find on the east coast.

10. Pasta Point, Maldives

Just a short ferry ride from Male, the country’s capital city is a private island called Dhonveli. This beautiful island is home to the Maldives’ best and most consistent wave, Pasta Point. Getting to surf this high-end reef break with only you and a few other surfers out (30 people max.) is something that can’t really be found these days. If you cannot afford to stay at the Dhonveli Resort, there are a few similar “public” waves in the area like Honky’s and Sultan’s.

9. P-Pass, Micronesia

This one is probably the least known in the whole countdown but it totally deserves its rank. P-Pass is located on the Federated States of Micronesia‘s main island, Pohnpei. It is a powerful and hollow right-hand wave that was surfed by many of the world’s best surfers either on strike missions or posing for magazines. 

Being a bit far from land, the only way to get access to the wave is by boat which are offered by a few surfing companies, the main one being the Pohnpei Surf Club.

8. Lance’s Right, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia

Lance’s Right is located in the Mentawai Island chain which is becoming the new surfing mecca. More and more surfers discover the potential of the waves of this region, Lance’s Right being the main attraction. This wave is a hollow and fast right-hand break that will challenge even the best surfers out there.

7. Superbank, Gold Coast, Australia

The Gold Coast is a huge surfing scene in Australia, mostly because of Superbank, a man-enhanced sandy point break that provides great waves any day of the year. Even when conditions are bad (onshore wind and messy swells), there will still be something to catch out there. However, when conditions become epic, like what we saw with the last few cyclones, this wave breaks all the way from Snapper Rocks to Kirra for the ride of a lifetime.

6. Honolua Bay, Maui, Hawaii

Located in the heart of West Maui, Honolua Bay is a consistent and long right-hand wave that has some barreling sections as well as long carving walls. Usually lighting up on a westerly swell, Honolua Bay attracts a pretty big crowd being by far the best option to surf on Maui’s west side.

5. Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia

Uluwatu is Bali‘s most popular and picturesque surf spot, located at the bottom of some very impressive cliffs. This wave typically has three different takeoff spots which link together on good swells forming an extra long wave with a few cover-up sections and some straight walls to pump some speed. Crowds are usually a big factor, but the whole setup is just too good to skip.

2. Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Teahupo’o is the most perfect barrel on the planet, period. Whether it is from 4 feet or 25 feet+, this wave will stay just as hollow and clean. At first, what may look like a closeout, suddenly offers an end section that spits you out in the channel for a 4-5 seconds ride maximum. However, this wave is not about length, it is about the thrill. Given its remote location, Teahupo’o remains much less crowded than Pipeline and the town is still very raw.

The general setup is also gorgeous with crystal clear water and a jaw-dropping landscape shaped by volcanic mountains in the back. Be ready to touch the reef and break a few boards.

1. Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii

It was pretty natural to award the number one spot to the Queen of all waves, Pipeline. Not only is this wave totally insane, it has a deep and magical history. Many great surfers grew up on this wave to later be crowned as world champions on that same wave. Pipeline is a hollow and powerful Hawaiian reef break that offers consistent and perfect tube rides, wave after wave.

Although it is considered as one of the best waves on Earth, it most definitely is also the most dangerous one. Many surfers have suffered serious injuries on this reef, some of them paying the cost of life. That doesn’t stop all the professional surfers from heading down to Pipeline every winter to battle in the Pipe Masters and get ready for the next season.

Hands down one of the best waves in Asia, Scar Reef is located in West Sumbawa.This region is stacked with many other high-level reef breaks like Yo-yo’s, Northern Rights and Super Sucks. Scar Reef is a powerful and hollow wave that breaks on larger southwesterly swells and provides epic barrels, featuring a very shallow reef, hence its name.

Located just next to Lombok, Sumbawa is often way less crowded than Bali simply due to its remote location.

9. Uluwatu, Bali, Indonesia

Uluwatu is probably Bali’s most popular and most beautiful surf spot. Not only is the wave itself incredible but the whole setup is truly gorgeous.

Located in the Bukit’s Peninsula, Uluwatu is known for its cliffs and sunsets. The wave has several different takeoff spots that can connect on good days and form a long, sometimes hollow, mesmerizing ride.

8. Cloud Nine, Siargao Island, Philippines

Cloud nine is the best wave and most popular surf spot in the Philippines. It is a heavy barreling slab located on the island of Siargao, a small surfing island on the eastern side of the country.

This wave, known as the Asian Pipeline, is not suited for novice surfers but is still more forgiving than its Hawaiian sister with a reef that’s a bit more forgiving.

7. Nihiwatu, Sumba, Indonesia

Sumba is a pretty remote island from the Lesser Sunda Islands (Nusa Tenggara) that is home to one of Indonesia’s best waves, Nihiwatu.

Playa Colorado, Nicaragua

With 300+ days of offshore winds in a year, surf spots rarely get as consistent as they do in Nicaragua.

Playa Colorado is well positioned in Nicaragua, right between San Juan del Sur and Popoyo, two of the country’s most popular surf towns.

The wave offers a bit of everything from fast down-the-line sections to challenging hollow ones to practice tube riding skills.

1. Honolua Bay, Maui, Hawaii

This long and consistent right wave truly embodies what Hawaiian surfing is like. Beautiful, consistent, powerful and raw. Honolua Bay lights up when the first north swells hit Hawaii early November and fires up until the end of winter somewhere around April.

Over this period of time, a highlight reel of tube riding action takes place is this peaceful bay located on the west side of Maui.

Honolua Bay has also been the venue for the last event of the women’s CT every year since 2014.
