Apart from the few Skeleton Bay endless barrel videos that leaked the internet, Namibia remains a pretty untouched surfing destination. The cities still have a strong European influence but as soon as you escape them, you will find an endless coastline with huge surfing potential…and barely anyone out.

While Skeleton Bay is a very fickle and tricky spot that only works on large swells, you will find some consistent breaks near the Swakopmund area. For the rest, it is all still up to you to discover. Beginners will have a bit of a harder time here and would most definitely prefer learning with a surf school in South Africa.

Namibia is also home of the world’s oldest desert, the Namib. Safaris are offered and represent the opportunity of a lifetime to see some of the most amazing wildlife.

The best time to surf Namibia depends on what kind of conditions you are looking for. This part of the African coast is exposed to consistent groundswells throughout the year. Often known as one of the world’s top kiteboarding and windsurfing destinations, Cape Verde (Cabo Verde) also offers a variety of uncrowded surf spots for those looking to chase waves instead of wind.

This volcanic archipelago sits in the Atlantic Ocean, about 570 kilometers (350 miles) west of Senegal, and is made up of 10 islands, each exposed to different swell and wind directions. Surfing here is about adventure, variety, and escaping the crowds.

When to go

The best time to surf Cape Verde is from November to March with bigger and more consistent swells. During this season, winds will also be much stronger. From, April to October you will find less consistent waves but also more mellow winds.

On Isla de Sal, where most surf spots will be found, the two best cities to establish yourself on a surf trip are Santa Maria or Palmeira. They both give you great access to several decent surf spots on the island.

This little town is located in False Bay, less than 30 minutes away from Cape Town. Muizenberg has a unique culture with a bit of a European influence that will most likely charm anyone making the trip down here. Furthermore, Muizenberg is blessed with consistent ground swells and many types of breaks to please all kind of surfers.

This town is known to offer optimal surfing conditions for beginners with many mellow waves and longboarding spots

 
Away from the city noise, Muizenberg can still get very crowded when conditions are good. If the swell doesn’t quite reach into the bay or if the wind is bad you can always drive on the other side of the Cape Peninsula (30 minutes) and check conditions at Noordhoek Beach.
