Surf spots in Mozambique

Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro is arguably the best and most famous surf spot in Mozambique. On a good day, this wave can peel for hundreds of meters, offering one of Africa’s longest rides. However, it’s known to be fickle and works best with the right swell and wind combination.

  • Wave direction : Right
  • Bottom : Sand
  • Best tide : Low-mid
  • Skill level : Any
  • Optimal swell direction : NE-SE
  • Optimal wind direction : NW

Tofinho

Tofinho is a beautiful, reliable beach with a reef and sandy bottom mix. It produces both left and right waves, but the left-hander off the point is the most sought after. Tofinho is a great place to base yourself for a surf trip, with friendly locals and a laid-back vibe.

  • Wave direction : Left and right
  • Bottom : Sand
  • Best tide : Any
  • Skill level : Any
  • Optimal swell direction : SE
  • Optimal wind direction : W

Getting there

Ponta do Ouro is right next to the South African border and many south Africans drive all the way up there. Many others fly up to Maputo and drive around. Mozambique is a fairly long country, most of the good surf is in the southern region.
