<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Summary</strong></span></h2>
<p data-start="179" data-end="533"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Madeira is a beautiful, rugged archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, about 600 miles southwest of mainland Portugal and just off the Moroccan coast. While it’s best known for its dramatic cliffs, lush hiking trails, and mild year-round climate, Madeira is also a hidden gem for surfers looking for uncrowded lineups and powerful reef breaks.</span></p>
<p data-start="535" data-end="898"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The island’s exposure to consistent North Atlantic swells makes it a solid surf destination, especially in the winter months when waves are bigger and more reliable. Most of the best surf spots are located on the west and southwest coasts of Madeira Island, with waves suited for both experienced surfers and adventurous beginners looking for a challenge.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>When to go</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The best time of year to surf in Madeira depends on your preferences and the type of waves you are looking for. The winter months (December to March) typically offer the best conditions for surfing, with larger and more consistent waves. The summer months (June to September) tend to have smaller and less consistent waves, but the water is warmer and the weather is generally more pleasant.</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong>Summary</strong></span></h2>
<p class="" data-start="420" data-end="685"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Surfing in the Azores offers uncrowded lineups, year-round swell, and stunning natural beauty. Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, this Portuguese archipelago is gaining popularity as a top surf destination in Europe, yet still feels like a hidden gem.</span></p>
<p class="" data-start="687" data-end="852"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Whether you&#8217;re a beginner looking for mellow summer waves or an advanced surfer chasing powerful winter swells, the Azores surf scene has something for everyone.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong>Why Surf the Azores?</strong></span></h2>
<p class="" data-start="884" data-end="1137"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The Azores&#8217; mid-Atlantic location gives the islands exposure to a wide range of swell directions. North swells dominate in winter, while southern swells light up the coasts in summer. This dual exposure means you can surf the Azores any time of the year.</span></p>
<p class="" data-start="1139" data-end="1308"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Unlike mainland Portugal’s crowded beaches, many Azores surf spots remain relatively uncrowded. The archipelago’s remote setting has kept it off the radar, until now.</span></p>
<p class="" data-start="1310" data-end="1460"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The Azores consist of nine islands, with the majority of surf infrastructure, surf schools, and surf camps located on São Miguel and Terceira.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong>Best time to surf the Azores</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The best time to surf the Azores is in winter, from October to March while the islands receive consistent north swells. However, the archipelago is gifted with waves year-round with the summer months (June-July-August) offering warmer weather and smaller southerly swells.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">There are two solid options to base yourself on a surf trip to the Azores. The first one is Sao Miguel, which is the Azores most populated island and also where you can find the highest amount of surf spots. The other option is Terceira, further up north, second most populated island and a great place to go for a surf trip with a few surf camps and surf schools.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The easiest way to get to the Azores is by air. <strong data-start="3200" data-end="3217">Daily flights</strong> operate from <strong data-start="3231" data-end="3251">Lisbon and Porto</strong> to the Azores’ main international airport on São Miguel Island (João Paulo II Airport). <p data-start="287" data-end="563"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Fuerteventura is the second-largest island in the Canary Islands and one of the best surfing destinations in Europe. Nicknamed the “Hawaii of Europe,” the island offers an incredible variety of surf spots, consistent year-round waves, and stunning volcanic landscapes.</span></p>
<p data-start="565" data-end="885"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned surfer looking for barrels, Fuerteventura has something for everyone. The island’s north shore, especially around Corralejo, is the most popular base for surf trips thanks to its proximity to the best waves, surf camps, lively nightlife, and surf-friendly atmosphere.</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong><a id="summary"></a>Summary</strong></span></h2>
<p data-start="261" data-end="527"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Gran Canaria is a world-class surf destination in the Canary Islands, offering waves for all skill levels, year-round sunshine, and warm water temperatures. Whether you’re chasing heavy reef breaks or learning to ride your first waves, Gran Canaria delivers.</span></p>
<p data-start="529" data-end="775"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The island’s north coast, stretching from Las Palmas to El Pagador, is the most wave-rich zone, consistently picking up winter swells. The south coast tends to offer smaller, softer waves, making it ideal for beginners and casual surfers.</span></p>
&nbsp;
<h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong><a id="when-to-go"></a>When to go</strong></span></h2>
<span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The best time to surf Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, is from October to April for bigger and more consistent waves. Beginners looking for smaller waves will probably have a better time from May to September, during the summer season.</span>

<p data-start="279" data-end="609"><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Lanzarote, one of the most surf-rich islands in the Canary Islands archipelago, offers year-round waves, striking volcanic landscapes, and a laid-back island vibe. <h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong><a id="summary"></a>Summary</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The surf in France has built a great reputation for itself over the last few decades. Biarritz is a charming surf town located in the Basque Country region, on the south west part of France. The surfing culture in Biarritz is very present and remains the number one reason why people come down here every summer.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Located less than an hour away from <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/hossegor-france-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">Hossegor</a></strong>, another mythical French surf town, Biarritz will charm you with its stunning beaches surrounded by cliffs and rocks. </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Most surf spots here are beach breaks which can be perfect for all skill levels, as long as waves aren&#8217;t too big. On larger swells, rip currents become quite powerful and such conditions should be surfed only by experienced riders.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Typically, the summer months offer beautiful weather and friendly waves which attracts a lot of people from all over Europe. Having several surf spots in the area, the crowd is definitely spread a bit, but remains a factor to consider. </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_3293" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3293" style="width: 1000px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-3293" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/emma-paillex-tkOviKQP0QM-unsplash-1-scaled-e1621628651121.jpg?resize=1000%2C749&#038;ssl=1" alt="Man surfing Biarritz, France" width="1000" height="749" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-3293" class="wp-caption-text">Photo by Emma Paillex</figcaption></figure></p>

<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong><a id="when-to-go"></a>When to go</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The best time to surf Biarritz, France depends on your skill level and what kind of waves your are looking for. From May to September, Biarritz offers less consistent waves with warmer temperatures and a lively social life in town. This period is good for families and surfers looking to improve their skills.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"> From October to April, waves become much more consistent and also bigger in size which will be suitable for experienced surfers. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Biarritz has an international airport located about 10 minutes from the ocean. It is also the main entrance point to <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/hossegor-france-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">Hossegor</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/san-sebastian-spain-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">San Sebastian</a></strong>, two other popular surf towns in the area.</span><a id="safety"></a></p>

<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Safety/things to know</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><span style="font-size: 18.6667px;">Although Biarritz is a very safe environment for locals and tourists, the surf can quickly get rough and rippy. Beach breaks usually move a lot of water and around and it can put inexperienced surfers in danger. If you are a beginner, make sure to do your homework before getting in the ocean, either by hiring a surf coach or checking with lifeguards for any rip currents etc.<a id="surf-spots"></a></span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Grande Plage is Biarritz main beach. It is a fairly consistent beach break that tends to get super crowded in the summer months. When conditions are small, it is suitable for all skill levels.</span></p>

<h2></h2>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Summary</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The Canary Islands are composed of 7 major islands located just off the Moroccan coast. They quickly became one of Europe&#8217;s premium surfing destination with year-round sunshine and amazing surf. Just like <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/isla-de-sal-cape-verde/" data-wpel-link="internal">Cape Verde</a></strong>, the Canary Islands are exposed to strong winds which makes them also very popular amongst the kite surfing and wind surfing communities.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Out of the whole archipelago, there are 4 islands you really should consider for a surf trip. Let&#8217;s have a closer look at each of them.</span><a id="fuerteventura"></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Fuerteventura</strong></span></h3>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Second largest island behind Tenerife, Fuerteventura, which stands for &#8220;strong wind&#8221;, is also the one with the most surf spots. The city of Corralejo, located on the north side of the island, is where most people base themselves for their surf trip on Fuerteventura as it has the biggest selection of accommodation, bars, restaurants and cafes.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/fuerteventura-canary-islands-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">Read our complete surfing guide to Fuerteventura</a></strong></span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The good thing about this island is the big variety of surf spots that will suit beginners, intermediate and advanced surfers. You will be able to chose from beach breaks like El Cotillo, Playa Blanca and Cofete Beach or powerful reef breaks like The Bubble and Los Lobos.</span><a id="tenerife"></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_1630" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-1630" style="width: 1200px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-1630" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/michael-baccin-lngSLLuXosA-unsplash-e1621614171869.jpg?resize=1170%2C657&#038;ssl=1" alt="Fuerteventura surf beach Canary" width="1170" height="657" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-1630" class="wp-caption-text">Photo by Michael Baccin</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Tenerife</strong></span></h3>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Tenerife is the biggest island of the archipelago and also the most visited. It has so much to offer from hikes, stunning landscapes, nightlife, luxury resorts, top restaurants and of course, insane surfing. </span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><figure id="attachment_2162" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2162" style="width: 815px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-2162" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Tenerife-%40jairopacwaves.jpg?resize=815%2C535&#038;ssl=1" alt="Tenerife Canary surf" width="815" height="535" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Tenerife-%40jairopacwaves.jpg?resize=300%2C197&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Tenerife-%40jairopacwaves.jpg?resize=230%2C151&amp;ssl=1 230w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Tenerife-%40jairopacwaves.jpg?resize=350%2C230&amp;ssl=1 350w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Tenerife-%40jairopacwaves.jpg?resize=480%2C316&amp;ssl=1 480w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/Tenerife-%40jairopacwaves.jpg?w=754&amp;ssl=1 754w" sizes="(max-width: 815px) 100vw, 815px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2162" class="wp-caption-text">Photo by @jairopacwaves</figcaption></figure></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The best place to base yourself for a surf trip is on the north side of the island around the Bajamar area. This region has incredible reef and beach breaks while being away from the very touristy Playa de las Americas. If crowds don&#8217;t scare you, the latest is still a very good surfing region and it is also where you will find most of the nightlife on the island.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/tenerife-canary-islands-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">Read our complete surfing guide to Tenerife</a></strong></span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Another good town is Puerto de la Cruz which is pretty central on the west side giving you good access to many surf spots along the coast.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Spain&#8217;s highest peak, Mount Teide, is also located on Tenerife and attracts hikers from all around the globe every year.</span><a id="gran-canaria"></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Gran Canaria</strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Most of the surf spots on Gran Canaria are located on the north side of the island. Las Palmas is undeniably the most popular place to settle and base yourself with a lot of accommodation, restaurants and surf camps.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">La Cicer is the number one surf spot near Las Palmas and will suit all levels of surfing. However, it remains very popular and can get a bit crowded. Nearby are a few other very good spots like El Lloret and La Barra.</span></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Further west are the towns of San Andres and El Puertillo which are also surrounded by many surf spots. Most of them being shallow reef breaks, make sure you read tides carefully and watch out for sea urchins.</span><a id="lanzarote"></a></p>

<h3><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Lanzarote</strong></span></h3>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Lanzarote is the smallest of the 4 major surfing islands in the archipelago. However, it still has just as many decent breaks as the rest of them.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Like for most of the Canary Islands, the best surf in Lanzarote is located on the west side. Playa de Famara is a large beach break, perfect for all surfing levels.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Experts will find challenging waves at San Juan and El Quemao, two extremely powerful and technical spots that are sometimes compared to some of the world&#8217;s best waves.</span><a id="when-to-go"></a></p>

<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>When to go</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The Canary Islands are blessed with year round swell and sunshine. Whether you come for a summer holiday or to escape the winter chills, you will definitely find waves and have a very pleasant time.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Beginners might prefer the summer swells that occur between May and October which are more gentle and forgiving. For a bit more action, the north Atlantic swells will hit from November to April. However, as it goes on any island, if the waves are too big on one side, you can always seek a more sheltered area or simply go check another side of the island that will offer totally different conditions.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Flying is the only and best way to get to the Canary Islands. All seven major islands have an airport and depending on where you fly from, you will most likely have to transit in Madrid.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">To hop from an island to the other, the best way is probably by sea with one of the many ferries that link the islands between them.</span><a id="safety"></a></p>
