Surfing Guide to Guatemala

Summary

Guatemala is a hidden gem for surfers, with a range of great surf spots along both its Pacific and Caribbean coasts. The country is known for its consistent waves, warm water, and beautiful scenery, making it an excellent destination for surfers of all levels.

On the Pacific coast, you’ll find powerful waves, ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers. The region is home to a mix of beach breaks and point breaks, offering everything from long, mellow rides to hollow and challenging waves. On the other hand, the Caribbean coast tends to be more sheltered, with smaller, more manageable waves, perfect for beginner to intermediate surfers.

In addition to the popular spots, there are also some lesser-known breaks across both coasts that can offer exciting surf when conditions align.

  1. I live here, on the beach, and I see so MANY beginner and intermediate surfers leave frustrated. It’s super strong, super powerful, and you really need to have skillz to surf here. Also, the season only goes from December to Feb.. then it gets scary. (Rainy season- Giant trees and tons of rubbish get washed ashore). Even the locals won’t go in.

  2. NOT for all surfers- I live in Guatemala and visit the surf beaches a lot. The swell is very inconsistent, rainy season (May-November) being the most unreliable. The winter months are also hit-or miss. There are serious rip tides and currents, all year round. First-time surfers can learn in the white wash year round.
