Surfing Guide to Guatemala

Summary

Surfing in Guatemala can be very rewarding, with a number of good surf spots spread out along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. The Pacific coast is known for its powerful waves and strong currents, which make it suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. The beach breaks in this region can produce long, rideable waves, while the point breaks offer more challenging and hollow waves.

The Caribbean coast is generally more sheltered and offers a mix of beach breaks and reef breaks. The waves in this region are generally smaller and more suitable for beginner to intermediate surfers. In addition to the main surf spots, there are also a number of lesser-known breaks scattered along both coasts that can offer good waves when the conditions are right.

  1. I live here, on the beach, and I see so MANY beginner and intermediate surfers leave frustrated. It’s super strong, super powerful, and you really need to have skillz to surf here. Also, the season only goes from December to Feb.. then it gets scary. (Rainy season- Giant trees and tons of rubbish get washed ashore). Even the locals won’t go in.

  2. NOT for all surfers- I live in Guatemala and visit the surf beaches a lot. The swell is very inconsistent, rainy season (May-November) being the most unreliable. The winter months are also hit-or miss. There are serious rip tides and currents, all year round. First-time surfers can learn in the white wash year round.
