<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Playa Colorado</span></strong></h3>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Playa Colorado is probably Nicaragua&#8217;s best surfing playground for intermediate to advanced surfers. The whole beach is known for being a barreling machine, day in, day out.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Beginners can also enjoy some waves on smaller days or by walking down to playa El Gigante which is sometimes more sheltered from bigger waves.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">El Transito</span></strong></h3>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">El Transito is further up the coast and could be considered as one of the best places for beginners to learn how to surf in Nicaragua. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Playa El Transito is a wide beach with plenty of different peaks, breaking on a sandy bottom, perfect for learners. Waves never get too radical, unless a big swell hits the coast.</span></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Playa El Yanke is a remote beach located south of <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/san-juan-del-sur-nicaragua-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">San Juan del Sur</a></strong>, Nicaragua&#8217;s most popular surf town. This beach has a great beach break as well as a wedge on the left end which starts working from mid to high tide. This section is a perfect A-frame which is usually more suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. Playa El Yanke remains one of Nicaragua&#8217;s best surf spot, with a bit less crowd that the popular beaches that are Playa Maderas and Popoyo.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>4. Playa Maderas</strong></span></h2>
<figure id="attachment_2480" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2480" style="width: 820px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-2480" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=820%2C541&#038;ssl=1" alt="Surf Nicaragua Playa Maderas" width="820" height="541" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=300%2C198&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=230%2C152&amp;ssl=1 230w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=350%2C231&amp;ssl=1 350w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=480%2C317&amp;ssl=1 480w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?w=651&amp;ssl=1 651w" sizes="(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2480" class="wp-caption-text">Photo by @tribusurfnicaragua</figcaption></figure>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Playa Maderas is north of <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/san-juan-del-sur-nicaragua-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">San Juan del Sur</a></strong> and is probably Nicaragua&#8217;s most popular surfing beach. Waves are consistent on almost any swell and the beach is picture perfect. There are a couple surf shops and surf schools for beginners to get a lesson or simply to rent your equipment. There are also a few nice accommodation options right next to Playa Maderas if you don&#8217;t fancy the 20-30 minute ride from San Juan del Sur.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><strong><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;">5. Playa Colorado</span></strong></h2>
<figure id="attachment_2790" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2790" style="width: 820px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-2790" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=820%2C525&#038;ssl=1" alt="Playa Colorado Nicaragua surf" width="820" height="525" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=300%2C192&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=830%2C530&amp;ssl=1 830w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=230%2C147&amp;ssl=1 230w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=350%2C224&amp;ssl=1 350w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=480%2C307&amp;ssl=1 480w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?w=999&amp;ssl=1 999w" sizes="(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2790" class="wp-caption-text">Photo by Jerson Barboza</figcaption></figure>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Playa Colodado is arguably the best place in the world to learn how to ride barrels. This beach has insanely consistent surfing conditions with clean offshore wind on a daily basis. With its sandy bottom and top to bottom barreling waves, it is a gentle way for surfers to try to find some shade and tuck into a Nicaraguan barrel.</span></p>

<h2></h2>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong><a id="summary"></a>Summary</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The surf in Popoyo, Nicaragua is well known for being extremely consistent due to its offshore wind and year round barrel opportunities. This is what attracts more and more surfers every year who are, for the most part, trying to get away from the Costa Rican crowd.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com" data-wpel-link="internal"><strong>To find the best surfing destination for you, try our WaveFinder search engine!</strong></a></span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Popoyo is located on the southern end of Nicaragua&#8217;s Pacific coast and is a very good destination for laid back die-hard surfers trying to get in the water as much as possible without getting involved in the San Juan Del Sur madness.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/san-juan-del-sur-nicaragua-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">Read also: our San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua Surf Guide</a></strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong> </strong></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Many surf spots are located right around this little village. The most popular is simply called Popoyo. This A-frame reef break is very consistent and challenging while still being quite forgiving for surfers looking to improve without worrying too much about the consequences.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Beginners can also find their waves at the river mouth on Playa Guasacate or at Playa Santana, near Magnific Rock. On bigger swells, there is another spot called Popoyo outer reef which is a very shallow and hollow right-hander that should only be kept for experts.<a id="when-to-go"></a></span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>When to go</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The best time to surf Popoyo, Nicaragua is from April to October, when waves are more consistent and sizable while winds drop almost dead. This also happens to be the rainy season in Central America.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">The winter months, from November to March will offer decent conditions for learning on smaller waves as well as being sunny almost every day.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">A very nice A-frame slowly peeling down the reef with a little barrel opportunity. Perfect wave to get into reef surfing. Located between Magnific Rock and Playa Guasacate.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Popoyo&#8217;s outer reef is a whole different ball game&#8230;A scary monster that turns to life on bigger swells and probably represents the most dangerous wave in Nicaragua. Not only is the drop critical but so is the whole ride with some incredibly shallow sections. Should only be attacked by experience surfers with some local knowledge. </span></p>

<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong><a id="getting-there"></a>Getting there</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">All international flights land in Managua from where you can catch a taxi or private shuttle to Popoyo (1 hour drive). The cheaper option is using the public bus from Managua to Rivas and then from Rivas to Las Salinas which is next to Popoyo.</span><a id="safety"></a></p>

<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;"><strong>Safety/things to</strong> <strong>know</strong></span></h2>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Nicaragua suffered a bit of political instability in the last few years.  Although most flights land in Managua, the capital city is best to be avoided. Take a bus or taxi and head straight to the tourist zones.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Consistent offshore wind and clean waves.</span></li>
