<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Playa Colorado</span></strong></h3>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Playa Colorado is probably Nicaragua&#8217;s best surfing playground for intermediate to advanced surfers. The whole beach is known for being a barreling machine, day in, day out.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Beginners can also enjoy some waves on smaller days or by walking down to playa El Gigante which is sometimes more sheltered from bigger waves.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3><strong><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">El Transito</span></strong></h3>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">El Transito is further up the coast and could be considered as one of the best places for beginners to learn how to surf in Nicaragua. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 14pt;">Playa El Transito is a wide beach with plenty of different peaks, breaking on a sandy bottom, perfect for learners. Waves never get too radical, unless a big swell hits the coast.</span></p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Playa El Yanke is a remote beach located south of <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/san-juan-del-sur-nicaragua-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">San Juan del Sur</a></strong>, Nicaragua&#8217;s most popular surf town. This beach has a great beach break as well as a wedge on the left end which starts working from mid to high tide. This section is a perfect A-frame which is usually more suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers. Playa El Yanke remains one of Nicaragua&#8217;s best surf spot, with a bit less crowd that the popular beaches that are Playa Maderas and Popoyo.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;"><strong>4. Playa Maderas</strong></span></h2>
<figure id="attachment_2480" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2480" style="width: 820px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-2480" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=820%2C541&#038;ssl=1" alt="Surf Nicaragua Playa Maderas" width="820" height="541" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=300%2C198&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=230%2C152&amp;ssl=1 230w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=350%2C231&amp;ssl=1 350w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?resize=480%2C317&amp;ssl=1 480w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Maderas-%40tribusurfnicaragua.jpg?w=651&amp;ssl=1 651w" sizes="(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2480" class="wp-caption-text">Photo by @tribusurfnicaragua</figcaption></figure>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Playa Maderas is north of <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/san-juan-del-sur-nicaragua-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">San Juan del Sur</a></strong> and is probably Nicaragua&#8217;s most popular surfing beach. Waves are consistent on almost any swell and the beach is picture perfect. There are a couple surf shops and surf schools for beginners to get a lesson or simply to rent your equipment. There are also a few nice accommodation options right next to Playa Maderas if you don&#8217;t fancy the 20-30 minute ride from San Juan del Sur.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><strong><span style="font-family: georgia, palatino, serif; font-size: 18pt;">5. Playa Colorado</span></strong></h2>
<figure id="attachment_2790" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-2790" style="width: 820px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-2790" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=820%2C525&#038;ssl=1" alt="Playa Colorado Nicaragua surf" width="820" height="525" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=300%2C192&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=830%2C530&amp;ssl=1 830w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=230%2C147&amp;ssl=1 230w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=350%2C224&amp;ssl=1 350w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?resize=480%2C307&amp;ssl=1 480w, https://i0.wp.com/www.mywavefinder.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Colorado-%40jerson_barboza_photo.jpg?w=999&amp;ssl=1 999w" sizes="(max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px" /><figcaption id="caption-attachment-2790" class="wp-caption-text">Photo by Jerson Barboza</figcaption></figure>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Playa Colodado is arguably the best place in the world to learn how to ride barrels. This beach has insanely consistent surfing conditions with clean offshore wind on a daily basis. With its sandy bottom and top to bottom barreling waves, it is a gentle way for surfers to try to find some shade and tuck into a Nicaraguan barrel.</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong>Summary</strong></span></h2>
<p class="" data-start="422" data-end="800"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Surfing in San Juan del Sur is the perfect mix of epic waves, lively social vibes, and affordable tropical living. Tucked into Nicaragua’s southwest coast, this once sleepy fishing village has become a surf hot spot, especially for travelers looking for year-round waves, a buzzing party scene, and easy access to top surf breaks like Playa Maderas and Playa Hermosa.</span></p>
<p class="" data-start="802" data-end="899"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Whether you&#8217;re a beginner or chasing barrels, this is your go-to San Juan del Sur surf guide.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<h2 data-start="906" data-end="943"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong>Why Nicaragua is a Surf Mecca</strong></span></h2>
<p class="" data-start="945" data-end="1189"><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Nicaragua is often called the “offshore wind capital” of Central America. Thanks to Lake Nicaragua, just 50 km inland, surfers enjoy 300+ days of offshore winds per year, keeping waves clean and perfectly groomed almost all the time.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong>When to go</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The best time to surf San Juan Del Sur, Nicaragua as an intermediate or advanced surfer is from May to September for more consistent and bigger waves. However, October to April still offers some really fun and smaller waves with dry weather and stronger winds. Those conditions will greatly suit beginner surfers.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Playa Maderas is the most popular surfing beach around San Juan del Sur. Located about 20 minutes away from San Juan Del Sur, this picturesque beach offers great waves for all levels of surfers. A classic beach break that is not as punchy as would be <strong><a href="https://www.mywavefinder.com/destination/playa-colorado-nicaragua-surf-guide/" data-wpel-link="internal">Playa Colorado</a></strong>, for example, but is still very consistent. On most days, there is always something to surf at Playa Maderas.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Playa El Yanke is located just a bit further south near Playa El Coco and offers a very interesting surfing setup. <h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong>Getting there</strong></span></h2>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">The best way to get to San Juan Del Sur is either by bus or taxi from Managua. Buses will transit in Rivas.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Being only a few km away from the Costa Rican borders, you can also fly into Liberia or San Jose and hop over to Nicaragua.</span></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;"><strong>Safety/things to know</strong></span></h2>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">Nicaragua is known for its political instability and higher crime rates than neighbor Costa Rica. If you stay in tourist areas and avoid wandering around at night, you will be just fine.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-size: 14pt; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;">As for most of Central America, stingrays can be spotted on the ocean bottom. A good way to avoid being stung is to do the stingray shuffle.</span></li>
