I was lucky enough to visit Morocco a few times and every single time, waves are amazing! Morocco continues to attract surfers from around the world, thanks to its consistent Atlantic swells, warm winter weather, and laid-back coastal vibes. With improved infrastructure, more surf camps, and easy access from Europe, a surf trip to Morocco in 2025 is more appealing than ever. 

Morocco remains one of the cheapest surfing destinations with budget accommodation starting around US$10 per night and restaurant meals for $3.

Not only does Morocco have some of the best waves in the world, you will also be immersed in the rich Berber and Islamic culture which are still very present despite recent tourism development.

Sidi Ifni and Mirleft

About 3 hours south of Agadir is the town of Sidi Ifni, a local town bordered by a fairly big harbor. 45 minutes north of Sidi Ifni is Mirleft, a smaller and quieter Berber town. Between Sidi Ifni and Mirleft, dozens of surf spots with empty lineups on most days. A true surfing adventurer’s paradise. Beaches like Tamhrouchte, Legzira and Plage d’entrée will be more popular amongst surfers but along the coastline are a few coves like Aftass and El Wafi which are usually empty or slightly crowded at most.

Surfing the south of Morocco is a very rewarding experience as you get away from the thick and intense crowds of the Agadir region while keeping the same consistent swells. Towns like Mirleft and Sidi Ifni offer a real cultural immersion with only a few other tourists in sight. If hotels are not too abundant in the region, you are easily be able to find great Airbnb’s or vacation rentals for pretty cheap.

Taghazout and Tamraght

Taghazout is at the heart of the surfing scene in Morocco as most of the popular and mediatized waves are located around this trendy surf town. Anchor Point being the most known wave in Morocco, there are also several other world-class point breaks within driving distance such as Desert Point, Boilers and Killers.

What makes Taghazout special is the versatility of its surf breaks where beginners and experts can all find the right spot for them. The town of Taghazout is also very lively with many cafés, restaurants and shops as well as one of the most scenic skate park in the world!

10 minutes south is the more quiet town of Tamraght which is closer to surf spots like Banana Point and Anza. Tamraght will offer a different vibe than Taghazout, being more tranquil and not as busy.

Imsouane

The little surf town of Imsouane is known for having some of the longest waves in Africa. Imsouane is extremely lively and has become a hotspot in the Moroccan surfing scene. On most days, it is very normal to see hundreds of surfers in the water at the same time, making it a bit overwhelming. Despite that, the point is long enough to handle big crowds and it remains on of the softest and most gentle wave in Morocco, perfect for beginners.

Sidi Kaouki

Located about 30 minutes south of the historic city of Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki is another hidden gem on the Moroccan coastline. This small surf town is still very underdeveloped and has some world-class waves right by its doorstep. On good days, point breaks like La Grotte and La Couronne generate long and peeling right-hand waves with only a fraction of the Taghazout crowd.

The main beach at Sidi Kaouki is great for beginners and several surf shops offer lessons or board rentals. Further down the beach is a rivermouth with a reef bottom which is the most consistent surf spot in Sidi Kaouki.

Safi

For the more adventurous and gnarly surfers, Safi is the place to go on a surf trip to Morocco. The city’s main point break is a fast, hollow right-hander that breaks over reef and can hold serious size. On the right swell, it offers barrels that rival some of the best in the world. Safi is not your typical Moroccan surf town. It is an industrial city with a huge port and close to 700 000 habitants. 

If the heavy breaks of Safi are a bit too much, keep heading north towards Oualidia and El Jadida. Along the way, many empty peaks will reveal themselves right by the roadside and El Jadida has a bay which is usually much more sheltered, offering smaller peeling waves, depending on the swell direction.

Why it’s dangerous: Massive wave height, fast-moving water, strong currents, and unpredictable conditions.

Shipstern Bluff, Australia

Located on the southern coast of Tasmania, is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable surf spots in the world. Known for its “mutant” waves, Shipstern is infamous for producing some of the gnarliest, step-laden waves in surfing. What sets this wave apart is the way it folds into multiple sections, creating sudden “steps” within the wave that can throw surfers off balance. Surfboard volume

The first classic specification people look for when buying a surfboard is its volume, which is calculated in liters. The volume is a result of the length, width, thickness and shape of a surfboard. Pros: Good for steep and powerful waves, advanced maneuvers, and experienced surfers. Very small in size and easy to carry in your car on on an airplane.
Cons: Harder to catch waves, not as forgiving. When waves get much bigger in size, short boards can actually be too small and will not offer the paddle power to catch and be stable on such waves.

Fish

Description: Short and wide with a swallowtail, fish boards are known for their speed and maneuverability. They usually range from 5’4″ to 6’2″ and are wider than traditional shortboards. Fish boards are usually seen as eccentric and are good to simply catch waves and have fun.

Pros: Small to medium-sized waves, quick turns, and surfers looking for a more skaty feel. Fish boards can be used with a twin, quad or thruster setup which all offer different feels.
Cons: Not as performant as a short board.

Gun

Description: Guns are long and narrow boards designed for riding big waves. They often have a pointed nose and are built for speed and control in powerful surf. Guns are usually only used in big waves and by expert surfers so 99% of surfers on the planet should not even bother having one in their quiver.

Pros: Large and powerful waves and big wave riding.
Cons: Little to no maneuverability, nearly impossible to carry around.

Hybrid

Description: Hybrid boards combine features from different traditional shapes, creating versatile options that cater to various surfing conditions. They often blend characteristics of shortboards and fish boards.

Pros: Versatility, adapting to changing conditions, and surfers looking for a well-rounded option.
Cons: Does not offer the same performance as a short board.

Egg

Description: Egg-shaped boards are characterized by their rounded nose and fuller outline. They offer stability similar to longboards but are shorter, typically ranging from 6 to 8 feet.

Best For: Intermediate surfers on small to medium-sized waves, and a blend of stability and maneuverability.

Step-Up boards

Description: Step-up boards have a bit more volume and length than standard shortboards, while still providing the same performance. They are designed for larger and more powerful waves, providing surfers with control and confidence in critical conditions.

Best For: Bigger wave surfing, experienced surfers, and situations where paddling and control are crucial.

Your skill level

The first thing to known when buying a new surfboard is your skill level. As a rule of thumb, beginners will always want more volume in order to catch waves easier. Intermediate and experienced surfers can then decide which style of surfing they want to practice. 

The type of wave

The second thing is knowing where and what type of wave you want to surf. On smaller waves, you will want more volume in order to be able to paddle into them. As waves get bigger and more powerful, you do not need to have as much volume to catch them. 

Budget

The other major factor which will influence your choice of surfboard is your budget. Surfboards can range from less than $100 for a second-hand board up to the thousands of dollars for a high-end new board. Second-hand boards are not always beat up junks. 1. Is the surfboard “water tight”

This means looking for any ding or cracks which would lead to water going inside the board. This is crucial as water getting to the foam will make the surfboard much heavier and affect its buoyancy. In the long run, a water damaged surfboard is basically “dead”.

2. Previous repairs

If the board was previously damaged, it can still work just fine as long as it was repaired professionally and water doesn’t reach inside. If a board was spray painted, it is sometimes to hide a previous repair, so it usually is a red flag.

3. Sun damage

Yes, even the sun is bad for surfboards and will eventually make the resin completely dry up and crack. The sun will also cause the surfboard to delaminate which is the creation of an air bubble between the resin and the foam which is detrimental for a board.

Through the years, some shapers have built incredible reputations across the globe, sometimes because of their unique crafts and other times because of their affiliation with famous surfers.

Al Merrick, founder of Channel Islands Surfboards, is probably the most famous shaper of all time and was part of the iconic shaper/surfer duo between him and Kelly Slater. His surfboards are still widely produced and sold across the world and CIS remains a staple brand in the surfing industry.

Later on, Kelly Slater would partner up with FireWire to start his own line of surfboards called Slater Designs.

In Hawaii, many shapers have perfected the art of high performance surfboards like Eric Arakawa, Wade Tokoro and Jon Pyzel. The later is known for its iconic partnership with 2x world champion, John John Florence.

1. Right of Way

The surfer closer to where to wave breaks has the right of way. If someone on the inside decides to catch the wave, it would be considered “dropping in”. It is very important to understand who has priority on a wave in order to respect fellow surfers and know when you can catch a wave or not.

2. Dropping in

The act of dropping in on a surfer means taking off on a wave in front of another surfer who is already riding it. This is a basic rule that cannot be broken as it is a immensely disrespectful to other surfers. If dropping in was allowed or tolerated, surf spots would be absolute chaos.

3. Paddle Battles

If someone has the right of way and is trying to catch a wave, it can be frowned upon to see other people paddling strongly for the same wave. If that surfer in a priority position misses the wave, only then is it possible for another surfer to paddle and commit for the wave.

4. Sharing Waves

Typically, only one surfer should ride a wave at a certain time. However, with longer and mellow breaks, it is common to see a couple long boarders on the same wave. This is possible only through good communication between surfers and never invite yourself on a wave without permission. The surfer in position of priority will let you know if they want you to ride the wave with them or not. As a general rule, never try to catch a wave that is already being ridden. 

5. Respect the Pecking Order

On a break that has a smaller takeoff spot like an A-frame or a reef break, everyone catches the wave from the same spot. There is then an unformal line-up that you should follow where the surfer who has been waiting the longest has a shot at catching the wave. If a surfer just caught a wave, it is frowned upon to paddle straight back in front of everyone to the takeoff spot.

6. Stay Inside or Outside

Depending on your skill level, you will sit at different places in the lineup. At a point break, more experience surfers will catch waves right at the point and ride them all the way in as beginner surfers will mostly be invited to stay on the inside and catch smaller waves. Make sure to understand your skill level and know where you belong in the lineup.

7. If in doubt, don’t go out

As a surfer, it is important to be aware of your skill level and to understand what the surfing conditions are like on any given day. It waves seem too big or crowded from the beach, chances are they will appear even bigger once you are in the ocean. If in doubt, don’t go out and stay safe.

8. Control Your Surfboard

In the surf, it is important to always have control of your surfboard. That means wearing a leash at all time and when the wave breaks on you, use the duck diving or turtle roll techniques to stay in control and keep the lineup safe for everyone else.
