Why Surf Morocco in 2025?

The waves of Morocco continue to attract surfers from around the world thanks to its consistent Atlantic swells, warm winter weather, and laid-back coastal vibes. With improved infrastructure, more surf camps, and easy access from Europe, a surf trip to Morocco in 2025 is more appealing than ever.

Morocco remains one of the cheapest surfing destinations with budget accommodation starting around US$10 per night and restaurant meals for $3.

Not only does Morocco have some of the best waves in the world, you will also be immersed in the rich Berber and Islamic culture which are still very present despite recent tourism development.

Sidi Ifni and Mirleft

About 3 hours south of Agadir is the town of Sidi Ifni, a local town bordered by a fairly big harbor. 45 minutes north of Sidi Ifni is Mirleft, a smaller and quieter Berber town. Between Sidi Ifni and Mirleft, dozens of surf spots with empty lineups on most days. A true surfing adventurer’s paradise. Beaches like Tamhrouchte, Legzira and Plage d’entrée will be more popular amongst surfers but along the coastline are a few coves like Aftass and El Wafi which are usually empty or slightly crowded at most.

Imsouane is extremely lively and has become a hotspot in the Moroccan surfing scene. On most days, it is very normal to see hundreds of surfers in the water at the same time, making it a bit overwhelming. The city’s main point break is a fast, hollow right-hander that breaks over reef and can hold serious size. On the right swell, it offers barrels that rival some of the best in the world. Safi is not your typical Moroccan surf town. It is an industrial city with a huge port and close to 700 000 habitants.

If the heavy breaks of Safi are a bit too much, keep heading north towards Oualidia and El Jadida. Along the way, many empty peaks will reveal themselves right by the roadside and El Jadida has a bay which is usually much more sheltered, offering smaller peeling waves, depending on the swell direction.

When it comes to surfing, the thought of conquering some of the world’s most dangerous waves is irresistible for adrenaline junkies and professional surfers alike. Surfing dangerous waves isn’t just about skill; it’s about survival.

Whether you’re an aspiring big-wave surfer or simply fascinated by nature’s raw power, these waves and surf spots will inspire you to respect the ocean. From the shallow reefs of Teahupo’o to the record-breaking swells of Nazaré, each location presents its own unique set of challenges.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Teahupo’o is frequently listed as one of the most dangerous waves in the world. This terrifying break is known for its glassy yet heavy waves that slam surfers down on shallow reefs. The wave at Teahupo’o breaks below sea level and forms a perfect barrel. However, but the sheer weight of the lip and proximity to sharp coral make it one of the most dangerous surfing spots on the planet.

Why it’s dangerous: Shallow reef, heavy and hollow wave, sharp and live coral.

Pipeline on Oahu’s North Shore is where legends are made, and careers can be ended. This world-famous wave is as dangerous as it is iconic, forming perfectly hollow barrels that break over a table-top volcanic reef just a few feet below the surface. Pipeline is home to some of the deadliest surfing wipeouts in history, making it a prime example of a dangerous wave.

Why it’s dangerous: Shallow reef, powerful barrels, huge winter swells.

Read our surfing guide to Oahu, Hawaii

Nazaré, Portgual

Nazaré is the biggest surf spot ever surfed and also a very dangerous one. Without jet ski assist, many surfers would have lost their life to the strong currents of Nazaré. This wave is created by an underwater canyon which turns huge swells into massive 100ft+ waves.

Why it’s dangerous: Massive wave height, fast-moving water, strong currents, and unpredictable conditions.

Known for its “mutant” waves, Shipstern is infamous for producing some of the gnarliest, step-laden waves in surfing. What sets this wave apart is the way it folds into multiple sections, creating sudden “steps” within the wave that can throw surfers off balance. These unpredictable formations, along with the cold water and remote location, make Shipstern Bluff a beast only for the brave.

Why it’s dangerous: Cold water, unpredictable breaking pattern, sharks, cliffs.

Mavericks, located off the coast of Northern California, is infamous for its dangerous waves and icy cold water. The waves here are large and powerful, often crashing down with bone-rattling force. Wiping out at Mavericks can mean being held underwater for multiple wave sets, making it one of the most feared surf spots. If that was not enough, Mavericks is also one of the sharkiest surf spot in California…

Why it’s dangerous: Cold water, sharks, unpredictable swells and massive waves.

Buying the right surfboard can be a pretty difficult task even for the most experienced surfers out there. Many factors come into play like your skill level, the type of surf break, wave size, body weight and the desired surfing style you want to practice. Other secondary factors are not the neglect like the visual aspects, the shaper, the materials used to craft the surfboard and the price point.

Surfboards come in different sizes, shapes and designs which will completely change your experience in the water. For beginners, it is also very important to chose the right surfboard in order to help you learn faster and enjoy yourself in the water and not get discouraged after your first session.

Here is a step by step guide which will cover all the different questions you need to ask yourself before buying or renting a surfboard.

Surfboard volume

The first classic specification people look for when buying a surfboard is its volume, which is calculated in liters. The volume is a result of the length, width, thickness and shape of a surfboard. Simply put, the more volume a surfboard has, the more buoyancy it will offer. A surfboard with more volume allows to paddle faster and catch waves much easier. However, such surfboards will likely be less maneuverable.

The volume should also be linked to your body type and weight. You can use the Pyzel Volume Calculator to see what kind of surfboard volume is right for you depending on your size and skill level.

Different types of surfboards

Surfboards come in various shapes, each designed to suit different surfing conditions, styles, and skill levels. Understanding these shapes is crucial for selecting the right surf board for your needs.

Longboard

Longboards are typically 8 to 10 feet in length, with a wide nose and tail. They were the first types of surfboards ever ridden back in the early 90’s. They offer stability and are ideal for beginners to easily catch waves. Longboards also are widely used amongst experienced surfers looking for a more relaxed style of surfing.

Pros: Good for small to medium-sized waves, learning, and noseriding.
Cons: Harder to carry around, no possibility to duck dive and go under big white wash, less maneuverable.

Funboard (Mini Malibu)

Description: A hybrid between a longboard and a shortboard, funboards are shorter (around 7 to 9 feet) and more maneuverable than longboards. They provide a good balance of buoyancy, stability and performance.

Pros: All-around use, beginners transitioning to intermediate, and various wave conditions.
Cons: Not really possible to practice nose riding nor performance maneuvers. Sort of a weird in-between.

Shortboard

Description: Shortboards are typically 6 to 8 feet in length with a pointed nose and a narrow tail. They are designed for advanced surfers who prioritize maneuverability and speed. Shortboards are ideal to gain speed on a wave, do cut-backs, snaps, small barrel rides and air maneuvers.

Pros: Good for steep and powerful waves, advanced maneuvers, and experienced surfers. Very small in size and easy to carry in your car on on an airplane.
Cons: Harder to catch waves, not as forgiving. When waves get much bigger in size, short boards can actually be too small and will not offer the paddle power to catch and be stable on such waves.

Fish

Description: Short and wide with a swallowtail, fish boards are known for their speed and maneuverability. They usually range from 5’4″ to 6’2″ and are wider than traditional shortboards. Fish boards are usually seen as eccentric and are good to simply catch waves and have fun.

Pros: Small to medium-sized waves, quick turns, and surfers looking for a more skaty feel. Fish boards can be used with a twin, quad or thruster setup which all offer different feels.
Cons: Not as performant as a short board.

Gun

Description: Guns are long and narrow boards designed for riding big waves. They often have a pointed nose and are built for speed and control in powerful surf. Guns are usually only used in big waves and by expert surfers so 99% of surfers on the planet should not even bother having one in their quiver.

Pros: Large and powerful waves and big wave riding.
Cons: Little to no maneuverability, nearly impossible to carry around.

Hybrid

Description: Hybrid boards combine features from different traditional shapes, creating versatile options that cater to various surfing conditions. They often blend characteristics of shortboards and fish boards.

Pros: Versatility, adapting to changing conditions, and surfers looking for a well-rounded option.
Cons: Does not offer the same performance as a short board.

Egg

Description: Egg-shaped boards are characterized by their rounded nose and fuller outline. They offer stability similar to longboards but are shorter, typically ranging from 6 to 8 feet.

Best For: Intermediate surfers on small to medium-sized waves, and a blend of stability and maneuverability.

Step-Up boards

Description: Step-up boards have a bit more volume and length than standard shortboards, while still providing the same performance. They are designed for larger and more powerful waves, providing surfers with control and confidence in critical conditions.

Best For: Bigger wave surfing, experienced surfers, and situations where paddling and control are crucial.

Your skill level

The first thing to known when buying a new surfboard is your skill level. As a rule of thumb, beginners will always want more volume in order to catch waves easier. Intermediate and experienced surfers can then decide which style of surfing they want to practice.

The type of wave

The second thing is knowing where and what type of wave you want to surf. On smaller waves, you will want more volume in order to be able to paddle into them. As waves get bigger and more powerful, you do not need to have as much volume to catch them.

Budget

The other major factor which will influence your choice of surfboard is your budget. Surfboards can range from less than $100 for a second-hand board up to the thousands of dollars for a high-end new board. Second-hand boards are not always beat up junks. You can find some incredible deals on platforms like Facebook Marketplace or Facebook community groups.

What to look out for on a second-hand surfboard

Buying a second-hand board is awesome. Not only do you save a lot of money, you help reduce your environmental impact by giving a second life to an already existing board.

When buying a second-hand surfboard, there are a few things to inspect to make sure you are not buying a junk.

1. Is the surfboard “water tight”

This means looking for any ding or cracks which would lead to water going inside the board. This is crucial as water getting to the foam will make the surfboard much heavier and affect its buoyancy. In the long run, a water damaged surfboard is basically “dead”.

2. Previous repairs

If the board was previously damaged, it can still work just fine as long as it was repaired professionally and water doesn’t reach inside. If a board was spray painted, it is sometimes to hide a previous repair, so it usually is a red flag.

3. Sun damage

Yes, even the sun is bad for surfboards and will eventually make the resin completely dry up and crack. The sun will also cause the surfboard to delaminate which is the creation of an air bubble between the resin and the foam which is detrimental for a board.

Which are the best surfboards brands and shapers?

Through the years, some shapers have built incredible reputations across the globe, sometimes because of their unique crafts and other times because of their affiliation with famous surfers.

Al Merrick, founder of Channel Islands Surfboards, is probably the most famous shaper of all time and was part of the iconic shaper/surfer duo between him and Kelly Slater. His surfboards are still widely produced and sold across the world and CIS remains a staple brand in the surfing industry.

Later on, Kelly Slater would partner up with FireWire to start his own line of surfboards called Slater Designs.

In Hawaii, many shapers have perfected the art of high performance surfboards like Eric Arakawa, Wade Tokoro and Jon Pyzel. The later is known for its iconic partnership with 2x world champion, John John Florence.

In Australia, a few famous shapers also made a worldwide reputation for themselves such as Jason Stevenson, founder of JS Industries and Darren Handley, founder of DHD surfboards.

Conclusion

Buying a surfboard can be quite a headache but if you take your time and consider all the variables such as your skill level, the type of wave you wanna surf, your weight and your budget, you will make things much simpler.

Keep in mind that the most common mistake a beginner surfer makes is going on a board that is too small for them. Having some extra volume never hurts!

Maui is a popular Hawaiian island when it comes to surfing thanks to world-class surf spots like Honolua Bay and Pe’ahi. However, Maui still has some beginner friendly waves and many other hidden surf spots.

Here are 4 of the best waves and surf spots on the island of Maui.

Ho’okipa

On the north side of the island, just a couple miles away from the historic town of Pa’ia is a beach called Ho’okipa which is known as one of the best kitesurfing beaches in the world.

Ho’okipa also has some great waves for regular surfing and through the winter months, considerably big swells run into Ho’okipa. This surf spot is better for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Lahaina Harbor

Lahaina, Maui by Goin Left Maui

On the west side is the once beautiful town of Lahaina which was heartbreakingly destroyed by a wildfire in the summer of 2023. In front of Lahaina Harbor is a beautiful reef break that works both on south and north swells which means it will work throughout most of the year.

Lahaina remains Maui’s most accessible and popular surf spot.

Honolua Bay

Honolua Bay, Maui. Photo by Jordan McQueen

Honolua Bay is the best wave and surf spot in Maui with a world-class point break that produces incredibly consistent waves throughout the winter months.

In order to work, Honolua Bay needs a good northwesterly swell and it will become a long wave that offers great walls to practice some carves as well as a few barreling sections.

Pe’ahi (Jaws)

Jaws is a big wave surf spot located on the north side of Maui about 15 minutes away from the town of Pa’ia. On a big north swell, chargers from all over the world rush into Maui to paddle into a giant wave at Pe’ahi.

This wave should only be surfed by extremely experienced big wave surfers with the proper equipment and safety teams. From the cliffs, anyone can have a nice view of the show while staying dry and safe.

Surfing is a lifelong journey, and most surfers find themselves in the “intermediate” zone for quite a while. While we all dream of charging the heaving barrels of Pipeline or Teahupo’o, the reality is that most of us aren’t there yet, and that’s perfectly okay.

As an intermediate surfer, you’ve likely outgrown sloppy beach breaks and are ready to challenge yourself on more powerful waves, maybe even some reef breaks. If you’re looking to push your skills in a safe but exciting way, here are 10 of the best surfing destinations for intermediate surfers around the world.

1. Indonesia

Surfing, with its laid-back lifestyle and intimate connection to nature, may seem like one of the most eco-friendly sports out there. The image of surfers gliding gracefully across the ocean, at one with the waves, gives the impression of a harmonious relationship with the environment. However, like many activities, surfing is not without its environmental impacts. While it’s not inherently “bad” for the environment, there are several factors to consider when evaluating the sustainability of this beloved sport. Here are a few factors to consider in order to keep the sport of surfing as sustainable as possible.

1. Carbon Footprint

The environmental impact of surfing begins with transportation. Most surfers need to travel to coastal destinations, often driving long distances or even flying to reach their favorite surf spots. These journeys contribute to carbon emissions, which are a significant contributor to climate change. Surfing events, competitions, and surf tourism can exacerbate this problem.

How to reduce your carbon footprint as a surfer

To reduce their carbon footprint, surfers can consider carpooling or limiting the number of flights they take every year. Instead of visiting several surfing destinations, spend more time at one spot, reducing your transportation.

2. Surf Gear Production

Surfboards, made from materials like polyurethane foam and fiberglass, are not eco-friendly. The production process is energy-intensive, and the toxic chemicals used can harm the environment. There is an increasing movement towards more sustainable materials, such as recycled foam, bamboo, and epoxy resin.

How to reduce the environmental impact of your surf gear

Buying second hand surfboards is a great way to reduce the environmental impact of your surfing equipment. One could argue there are already more than enough surfboards in this world for everybody. Furthermore, beginners and intermediate surfers will barely see the difference between a brand new board and a second hand board in good condition. When, you get a ding on a surfboard, take good care of it by keeping it out of the water until it is repaired. This will prolong the life of your surfboard.

3. Erosion and Coastal Development

The very nature of surfing relies on coastal areas. Unfortunately, these areas are often at risk due to erosion caused by climate change and coastal development. Building seawalls and jetties can negatively impact the natural flow of sand and waves, disrupting local ecosystems. To accommodate the ever growing market of surfing tourists, many hotels and surf camps are being built right along the coastline which leads to severe negative impacts on ecosystems.

Actors in the surf tourism industry should stay aware of those impacts and develop in a sustainable way both economically and environmentally. So far, the economic side is sadly overweighing the environmental side.

4. Overcrowding and Pollution

As the sport of surfing grows, we find more and more surfers in spots that were untouched a few decades ago. More visitors mean more stress on the environment in places where the infrastructure is not always there to host such a mass. Therefore, we find more sewage, plastic wastes and other pollutants in our oceans. This pollution in the ocean can lead to waterborne illnesses and harm marine life in an irreversible way. Surfers should be aware of water quality conditions in their chosen surf spots and support organizations working to reduce ocean pollution. Using eco-friendly sunscreen that doesn’t harm coral reefs is another way surfers can reduce their environmental footprint.

5. Marine Life Disturbance

Surfers share the ocean with diverse marine life. Paddling out to surf can disturb local ecosystems and wildlife. Some surf breaks are near sensitive marine habitats, such as coral reefs and mangroves. Surfers can minimize their impact by respecting wildlife, not disturbing nesting sites, and staying informed about local regulations and guidelines.

In conclusion, surfing is not inherently bad for the environment, but it does have its environmental impacts. These impacts can be mitigated and even turned into opportunities for positive change. Surfing enthusiasts and the industry as a whole have started to embrace more sustainable practices, from board materials to eco-friendly surf gear. Additionally, surfers can use their love for the ocean to advocate for marine conservation, participate in beach cleanups, and support organizations dedicated to protecting coastal environments. Ultimately, with awareness and effort, surfers can help ensure that their beloved sport remains in harmony with the natural world.
